About The Position

Under general supervision, the Network Technician installs and maintains network connectivity through wireless and wired networks. Assists with the maintenance of network switches, routers, fiber, copper and the applications that run on it including phone system, surveillance cameras, and wireless connectivity.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass criminal background investigation through CJIS.
  • Ability to plan and implement for the efficient and effective operations of the department.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and 2 or more years' experience in IT networking or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in information technology.
  • Knowledge of installation and maintenance of fiber optics and copper cabling.
  • Knowledge of installation, configuration, management and maintenance of network devices such as Cisco routers, switches, wireless bridges, controllers and access points.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting skills and techniques.
  • Knowledge of networking protocols and fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, Cisco Call Manager and Unity, Ocularis Client.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, IP subnets, IP routing, access-control lists, network address translation, VLANs and VLAN tagging, RADIUS, DHCP, DNS, TFTP, network topology diagrams, flow charts, network security best practices, 802.11 networks, radio frequencies, PtP / PtMP Wireless Bridge, and wireless link planning.
  • Ability to think critically and handle equipment and situations that are completely new and unfamiliar.
  • Ability to learn new things quickly and adapt to changing circumstances and technologies.
  • Ability to determine and solve problems related to designated areas of responsibility especially Cisco VoIP phone system and voicemail system, video surveillance system, network devices, and fiber optic or copper network cabling.
  • Ability to evaluate wired or wireless needs, operating technical equipment, and troubleshooting phone and network problems.
  • Ability to prepare concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to perform basic and complex mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate computers, including performing word processing, spreadsheet and presentation functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with end-users and other IT professionals, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to explain to group how to effectively assist in a project.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships co-workers and employees from other agencies.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree in computer information systems or directly related technical discipline preferable.
  • Certification in Network+ or CCNA is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to the needs and inquiries of users, solve problems, explain issues, and follow up with users to ensure the functionality of the users' systems.
  • Analyze computer and network related problems reported by end-users, diagnose the most effective resolution, and implement the solution.
  • Maintain detailed and up-to-date ticket notes in I.T. ticketing system, asset database, inventory, and documentation for searchable, troubleshooting guides for resolving incidents quickly.
  • Installs, terminates, and maintains all network cabling including fiber optic and copper.
  • Installs, assists with configuration, and maintains, network infrastructure devices including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless CPEs, access points, wireless controllers, etc.
  • Responds to significant network outages to assist Administrator to ensure connectivity is restored. Verifies connectivity within the City's LAN, to the Internet, and interconnection to other agencies is working.
  • Troubleshoots the City's Cisco VoIP phone system and voicemail system, and associated applications such as paging software and Cisco Jabber, including assisting the Administrator with managing the systems.
  • Assists with maintaining and troubleshooting the City's video surveillance system, including installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras.
  • Works with contractors/vendors as appropriate to complete projects.
  • Quickly diagnoses and solves problems under pressure.
  • Explains and updates other members of the IT team aspects of network related IT projects.
  • Answer group help-desk phone line and email inbox and assist users remotely or in person when needed.
  • Cooperates with other City staff and outside agencies; exhibits a courteous, professional manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the I.T. Manager and Network Administrator.
