About The Position

The Network / Systems Administrator is responsible for ensuring the functionality, security, and optimization of South Metro Fire Rescue’s network and systems infrastructure. This role oversees daily administration, maintenance, change management, and performance of network and server systems to ensure operational continuity across the District. Responsibilities include managing IP-based systems (e.g., wireless, VoIP, cameras, door controls), implementing upgrades, monitoring performance, and maintaining compliance with District policies. The position is also responsible for proactive monitoring, training, troubleshooting, security, and coordination of installations and changes on the SMFR network and servers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems management or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible computer experience including designing and managing large computer networks.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Windows Server administration.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the SMFR’s Driving Records Policy.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure to include IP systems such as wireless, IP phones, IP cameras/door controls, and server administration.
  • Broad working experience with all facets of IT services proven knowledge of systems development life cycle methodologies.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Administers, monitors, and optimizes the District’s network infrastructure to ensure consistent availability and performance.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains network devices including routers, switches, firewalls, and related hardware.
  • Manages network cabling, connectivity, and performance testing to ensure reliability.
  • Conducts proactive system analysis to prevent communication or connectivity issues.
  • Implements and maintains redundancy, backup, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Participates in the design and testing of network enhancements to support District objectives.
  • Maintains and supports virtualized environments, servers, and related infrastructure.
  • Ensures reliable operation of IP systems, including wireless networks, VoIP telephony, and security systems.
  • Manages user access, permissions, and security configurations in accordance with District standards.
  • Implements system upgrades, software patches, and firmware updates.
  • Oversees system backups and restoration processes to maintain data integrity.
  • Monitors systems for vulnerabilities, intrusions, and security incidents.
  • Implements and enforces security protocols, firewalls, and endpoint protection measures.
  • Supports compliance with data privacy, access control, and cybersecurity policies.
  • Participates in incident response, documentation, and mitigation activities.
  • Assists in planning and implementation of network and systems projects.
  • Coordinates and oversees vendor activities, installations, and service agreements.
  • Ensures vendor performance meets District quality and security standards.
  • Maintains accurate project documentation and communicates progress to stakeholders.
  • Researches and recommends technology enhancements to improve system efficiency and reliability.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation, including network diagrams, configuration records, and standard operating procedures.
  • Conducts periodic audits of systems, equipment, and practices to ensure alignment with District goals.
  • Contributes to divisional planning and strategic technology initiatives.
  • Serves as an escalation point for technical issues reported through the service desk.
  • Diagnoses and resolves hardware, software, and network issues promptly and effectively.
  • Maintains high level of customer support; prioritizes IT and communication service issues submitted to the service desk; answers phone calls, assigns and troubleshoots service tickets; identifies computer, printer, application, and network problems and works toward resolutions.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation providing after-hours support during evenings and weekends as needed; responds to after-hours incidents and coordinates communications and recovery actions.
  • Performs additional technology-related duties and special projects as assigned.
