About The Position

Network Engineer is a position under administrative supervision of the Manager of Network Services in Information Technology Infrastructure. Specific activities include installation, maintenance, management, and support of data network electronics and software in an enterprise 40/100-Gigabit Ethernet network. Salary Grade : 16 Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or an equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with a bachelor’s degree or 7 years of direct industry experience in at least one of the following areas: Configuration and maintenance of enterprise class networking hardware including switches, routers.
  • Configuration and maintenance of enterprise class wireless networking infrastructure and management software.
  • Configuration and management of enterprise class firewalls.
  • Proficiency with one or more UNIX scripting or text processing languages such as PERL, Python, awk or bash shell.
  • Experience with structured cabling systems.
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience with network management tools and protocols.
  • Personal initiative.

Nice To Haves

  • Cisco network related certifications such as CCNA and CCNP.
  • Experience with Fortinet firewall hardware and management software.
  • Experience with Cisco switching and routing protocols.
  • Experience with Cisco wireless controllers and management software.
  • Experience designing wireless deployments.
  • Experience with network protocol analysis/interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, deploy, and monitor MSU Campus Network infrastructure components such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless controllers.
  • Evaluate, test, and recommend new network hardware and software.
  • Manage and coordinate large-scale projects.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to the other divisions within Information Technology Services and to the MSU community at large.
  • Meet regularly with other members of Information Technology Infrastructure staff to discuss current issues and future plans.
  • Assist with the management and coordination of large-scale projects.
  • Be available weekends and nights for performance of duties as required.
  • Periodically, perform on-call duties by carrying a pager that alerts of system and network emergencies requiring immediate response 7x24.
  • Other duties as assigned.
