About The Position

This position directly supports the NOAA-NWS mission by ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of enterprise network infrastructure supporting headquarters, data centers, and field offices nationwide. The NOAA-NWS program has an opening for a Network Engineer IV located in the College Park, MD area. The Network Engineer IV will be responsible for the design, implementation, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of enterprise network infrastructure, including routing, switching, firewalls, WAN connectivity, and network security solutions. The selected candidate will support network modernization initiatives, infrastructure upgrades, operational troubleshooting, and the continuous availability of mission-critical systems supporting NOAA-NWS operations. This position requires U.S. citizenship and an active Public Trust clearance to start.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 8+ years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise network infrastructure in a large-scale environment.
  • Network certifications: Cisco Certifications (CCNA, CCNP, etc.)
  • Active/current basic JNCIA certification preferred
  • Experience working with Cisco ASA/Firepower and Juniper SRX appliances
  • Experience implementing and troubleshooting IPSec VPN tunnels
  • Deep understanding of networking protocols, i.e., BGP, IPSEC, EIGRP, OSPF, QoS, DHCP, WAN, VPN, VLAN
  • Experience using Solarwinds Performance Monitor and Configuration Manager
  • Experience implementing and troubleshooting AWS
  • Proficient knowledge of various network hardware equipment specifications, configuration and testing processes, and industry specifications.
  • Must have the ability to obtain Public Trust

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge of routing and switching technologies, including BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, VLANs, VRFs, and Layer 2/Layer 3 network design.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise networking platforms, including Cisco Catalyst, ASR, ISR, Nexus, Juniper EX, and SRX series devices.
  • Strong experience with network security technologies, including firewalls, VPNs, access control policies, intrusion prevention systems, and network segmentation.
  • Experience designing and supporting highly available and resilient network architectures across multiple sites, data centers, and cloud-connected environments.
  • Knowledge of WAN technologies, SD-WAN, circuit provisioning, and telecommunications vendor coordination.
  • Experience with network monitoring, performance analysis, packet capture, and troubleshooting tools.
  • Familiarity with cloud networking concepts and integration with AWS, Azure, or other cloud service providers.
  • Experience developing and maintaining network documentation, implementation plans, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
  • Strong understanding of change management, incident management, and IT service management processes.
  • Experience supporting the federal government, NOAA, DoD, or other mission-critical environments is highly desirable.
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA/CCNP Enterprise, JNCIA/JNCIP-ENT, JNCIP-SP, or equivalent are preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with customers, vendors, engineers, and leadership teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, configure, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and WAN connectivity solutions.
  • Collaborate with customers, project managers, architects, vendors, and cross-functional teams to plan, implement, and support network enhancements, upgrades, and modernization initiatives.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex network performance, routing, switching, security, and connectivity issues across enterprise environments.
  • Develop, review, and implement network device configurations, ensuring compliance with organizational standards, security requirements, and change management procedures.
  • Perform network assessments, testing, validation, and acceptance activities to ensure successful deployment of new services and infrastructure changes.
  • Monitor network health, availability, and performance, and recommend improvements to optimize reliability, scalability, and security.
  • Coordinate circuit activations, service migrations, and connectivity testing with telecommunications providers and third-party vendors to ensure end-to-end service delivery.
  • Support network security initiatives through firewall policy implementation, access control management, vulnerability remediation, and compliance with federal cybersecurity (CISA) requirements.
  • Participate in maintenance activities, incident response efforts, and after-hours support for critical network infrastructure as required.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations for improving the performance, resiliency, and operational efficiency of the enterprise network.
