The Network Engineer III is responsible for all aspects related to the maintenance, repair and support of networks and network-related products to ensure continued operation and functionality of Synoptek and customer network environments. The ideal candidate will have the ability to be technically hands-on, providing high-quality technical support to customers, speaking with a high level of technical understanding, making routine network changes, resolving technical problems, and helping to proactively prevent new issues as it relates to Synoptek and their client's IT infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited college or university
  • In lieu of undergraduate degree, the ratio is 1:1 - meaning one year of college equals one year of work experience and vice versa
  • Certification in ITIL, CCNA (R&S, Security), Fortinet NSE4 or higher. Other relevant network vendor-specific certifications may replace one of these certifications
  • Customarily has at least 7 years technical experience
  • Customarily has at least 5 years network engineer experience
  • Customarily has at least 5 years of client engagement experience
  • Experience with multiple network technologies (routing, switching, wireless, circuits) required
  • Experience with firewall security, access control list (ACL) management and secure remote management practices, required
  • Experience with routing and switching in non-standard/complex deployment environments, required
  • Has expert knowledge of how application data flows over the network (firm foundation of OSI model)
  • Has expert understanding of routing and switching in network environments including campus LAN, full-meshed WAN, SD-WAN, and Datacenter networks
  • Has advanced understanding of routing protocols including static routing and dynamic routing protocols such as EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP
  • Has advanced understanding and experience supporting layer 2 LAN topologies including extending VLANs across a network core, assigning VLANs to switch ports, manipulating spanning tree topologies, and operating in a highly redundant DataCenter LAN environment using technologies such as VXLAN, EtherChannel, and Cisco Nexus fabric
  • Has advanced understanding or and experience with firewall concepts such as security rule creation, NAT, LAN to LAN IPSEC tunnels, SSL VPN, routing, Unified Threat Management, application-layer security, and SD-WAN
  • Has advanced understanding of Wireless LAN concepts such as SSID creation, Access Point configuration and troubleshooting, Wireless LAN Controller configuration and troubleshooting, radio tuning, and authentication and authorization concepts such as RADIUS
  • Ability to develop and manage a mentorship relationship with 1 or more junior engineers
  • Ability to manage escalation requests and provide support to engineers struggling with unfamiliar technologies
  • Ability to develop training curriculum to provide to team members either one-on-one, or in a group setting

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Public Cloud networking such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, preferred.
  • Experience with load balancer technologies such as Azure Application Gateway, Azure Load Balancers, AWS Load Balancers, F5 BigIP, Kemp Load Balancers, FortiGate Load Balancing features, preferred
  • Experience with Web Application Firewalls such as Cloud Native solutions in AWS and Azure, Barracuda WAF, or FortiWeb, preferred
  • Has general understanding of Web Application Firewalls (WAF) and Application Load Balancing operation and configuration
  • Is a Subject Matter Expert in at least 2 of the following disciplines: Firewall configuration and deployment; Dynamic Routing using BGP and internal routing protocols like EIGRP or OSPF; Data Center LAN technologies such as VXLAN or Cisco Nexus fabric; Web Application Firewall configuration and tuning; Application Load Balancing configuration and tuning; and Cloud Technologies configuration and troubleshooting (i.e. Azure or AWS)

Responsibilities

  • Maintain proper ticket hygiene and adhere to ticket handling metric goals
  • Troubleshoot issues and execute change requests for existing customers
  • Follow a standard change control process requiring peer and manager approval
  • Ensure deliverables are completed in a timely manner and meet customer expectations
  • Identify escalation improvement opportunities within Synoptek's teams
  • Participate on a rotational on-call schedule
  • Commit to obtaining relevant training and certificates as determined by manager
  • Perform Firewall firmware patching during scheduled maintenance windows (sometimes during off hours)
  • Serve as network custodian for an assigned Synoptek office, performing regular maintenance and handling all issues for that specific office
  • Work with vendors and other third parties to provide support for customer networking environments (including equipment and circuit vendors)
  • Work on operational projects for Synoptek Enterprise and Service Provider environments
  • Work on small professional services projects for customers when required
  • Perform audit projects
  • Perform customer documentation assignments
  • Serve as a network mentor for other Network Engineers, or support engineers from lower tier departments
