About The Position

BAE Systems is seeking a Network Design Engineer to support an Intelligence Community (IC) program. This role involves delivering network support for the customer’s various wide area networks (WANs) and local area networks (LANs). The Design Engineer will support global enterprise networks, focusing on modernizing network components while ensuring service delivery for mission-focused operational requirements. The team is undertaking a complete replacement of a global enterprise network, providing design, engineering, and transition for a wide range of customer network needs. This is a significant opportunity to build and transition critical operations to a modern service provider network architecture.

Requirements

  • Must have 16 years of experience that can be a combination of work history and education. This equates to a Doctorate and 8 years, master’s and 10 years, bachelor’s and 12 years, associates and 14 years or HS diploma and 16 years.
  • Must be compliant with DoD 8140 Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level 2.
  • Experience specific to network engineering to include Tier III or higher network operations and/or network design and implementation.
  • Prior responsibility for production network hardware configurations for Cisco, Brocade, and/or Juniper.
  • Hands-on experience implementing and troubleshooting standard routing protocols in a production network, such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) or Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
  • Hands-on experience implementing and troubleshooting standard switching and trunking protocols in a production network, such as Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), 802.1q, and port-channels.
  • Ability to represent the team and deliver status reports to internal and external leadership.
  • Excellent organizational and follow through skills.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Detail oriented with problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Network engineering and design experience specific to CAN/LAN. Experience should include application of industry standards, developing configurations, and integration of solutions into production environments.
  • Network engineering and design experience with MPLS WANs, network management tools, and firewalls.
  • Expert knowledge of routing and switching protocols and the ability to demonstrate knowledge through briefings and documentation. Extensive BGP experience a plus.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or equivalent knowledge.
  • Initiative and disciplined to work unsupervised as part of a network engineering team.
  • Experience establishing processes, developing documents, and organizing repositories

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates new network technologies and makes recommendations to project managers regarding the integration of these technologies into the existing network.
  • Plans new network configurations and integration into existing networks to maintain optimal performance.
  • May supervise other network support and client server specialists and plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures.
  • Oversees network control centers.
  • Installs, configures, and supports an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN, Intranet and Internet and other data communications systems or a segment of a network system.
  • Monitors network to ensure network availability to all system users and perform necessary maintenance to support network availability.
  • Prepare technical proposals for presentation to the Government’s engineering review boards for adding new technologies to the network.
  • Review user requests for upgrades or additions to the network to assess impact on network performance and provide advice and guidance on the most practical technical approach to meeting user requirements.
  • Perform a full range of upgrades in accordance with existing network architecture.
  • Ensures that plans for hardware and communications are adequate. Develops and implements methodologies for analysis, installation and support of voice communications systems. Provides support in the translation of business requirements into telecommunications (e.g., LAN, MAN, WAN, Voice and Video) requirements, designs and orders.
  • Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
  • Monitor the performance of computer systems and networks
  • Configure, and test hardware, networking software and operating system software.
  • Identify and resolve hardware and software issues, replacing faulty components as necessary. Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations.
  • Perform long-term O&M activities to include tier 3 troubleshooting and problem resolution.
  • Perform routine network startup and shutdown procedures and maintain control records.
  • Ensure these systems and applications are compliant with standards for open systems architectures, reference models, and profiles of standards - such as the IEEE Open Systems Environment (OSE) reference model - as they apply to the implementation and specification of IM solutions on the application platform, across the application program interface (API), and the external environment/software application.
  • Apply software, hardware, and standards information technology skills in the analysis, specification, development, integration, and acquisition of open systems for Information Management (IM) applications.
  • Evaluate and recommend COTS applications and methodologies that can be acquired to provide interoperable, portable, and scalable information technology solutions.
  • Optimize network topologies and site configurations. Plan installations, transitions, and cutovers of network components and capabilities.
  • Analyze network characteristics (e.g., traffic, connect time, transmission speeds, packet sizes, and throughput); recommend procurement, removals, and modifications to network components.
  • Utilize complex network analysis tools to identify and correct problems in the network.
  • Prepare troubleshooting procedures for restoring the network to optimal performance levels.
  • Provide fault management for the network and supports performance management functions.
  • Respond, isolate, and resolve network troubles. Monitor alarms and alerts to identify network elements causing network degradation or failure.
  • Monitor security posture of the network, report suspected violations to designated authority.
  • Coordinate with configuration management and implementation teams.
  • Organize and direct network installations on site surveys.
  • Assess and document current site network configuration and user requirements.
  • Coordinate requirements with users and suppliers.
  • Provide fault management for the network and supports performance management functions.
  • Execute reporting functions and data input associated with network management.
  • Maintain logs and records associated with reported problems or situations.
  • Perform operator-level maintenance on components for network management systems
  • Maintain operating systems, communications software, database packages, compilers, assemblers, and utility programs.
