About The Position

The ideal candidate will support with excellence the Information Technology department’s use of local area network resources including but not limited to: server administration, Internet access, desktop support, remote access services, security, telecommunications support and enterprise applications. This role makes a daily difference in the Campbell County organization and locality through hard work, open and honest communication, ongoing improvement and accountability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or a related field preferred. In lieu of a degree, candidates with substantial hands-on experience and relevant industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, Security+) will be strongly considered.
  • Ability to successfully complete training in networking, system applications, security and other technical areas as directed by Department Head within the time period provided.
  • Successful completion of one specific training and respective certification within 12 months of employment date.
  • Valid Virginia Drivers’ license.
  • Completion of National Incident Management System IS-700 and IS-100 within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and maintains departmental network software applications, physical components of network topology and County standards.
  • Administers and maintains end-user accounts, permissions, access rights and storage allocations.
  • Manages servers, including domain controllers such as Active Directory and Azure, GIS, document management, badge/facility access, backup, SQL, time and attendance, in-car cameras, and Windows Server Update Services servers.
  • Manages security solutions, including firewall, endpoint protection and intrusion detection systems.
  • Manages all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches and UPSs.
  • Prepares and implements network equipment and server backups along with the respective restore processes to ensure integrity of the network and server environment.
  • Works alongside Service Desk staff to ensure network connectivity of all workstations.
  • Administers all equipment, hardware and software upgrades.
  • Monitors network and systems communication statuses and shares information obtained with other internal Information Technology staff.
  • Manages connection security for local area networks, the County web site, County Portal, email communications and other applications.
  • Oversees penetration testing of all systems to identify system vulnerabilities.
  • Monitors server logs, firewall logs, intrusion detection logs and network traffic for unusual or suspicious activity. Interprets activity and make recommendations for resolution.
  • Recommends, schedules (where appropriate) and applies fixes, security patches, disaster recovery procedures and any other measures required in the event of a natural disaster, data corruption, security breach, etc.
  • Downloads and tests new security software and/or technologies.
  • Responsible for proactive network and systems asset management, including maintenance of network component and server inventory and related documentation and technical specification information.
  • Performs server and security audits.
  • Conducts employee security awareness training and programs.
  • Monitors and tests network performance and provides respective statistics and reports.
  • Anticipates, mitigates, identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves hardware and software problems on network equipment and servers.
  • Analyzes system, server, application, network and input/output device performance.
  • Recommends, schedules, and performs software and hardware improvements, upgrades, patches, repairs, reconfigurations and/or purchases.
  • Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts.
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of emerging technologies through attendance and participation in conferences, trainings and seminars.
  • Participates in negotiations with vendors, outsources, and contractors to secure hardware, software products and services.
  • Plans, implements and manages technology projects to include but not limited to monitoring and reporting on progress and managing change to achieve project outputs.
  • Develops, documents and maintains policies, procedures and associated training plans for network and system administration and appropriate use.
  • Supports telecommunications infrastructure and its associated software, including VOIP architecture and interactive voice response and video conferencing systems.
  • Configures, tests, maintains, monitors and troubleshoots end-user telecommunications hardware, telephony devices and voice/data hardware products.
  • Prepares specifications for purchases of applications, computers, servers, and network-related equipment as needed.
  • Answers “service desk” calls from department users and troubleshoots both hardware and software problems as required.
  • Documents all network and systems changes using the established change management processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
