About The Position

The NERC CIP Armed Security Operator position ensures the security of APC Corporate Headquarters, associated facilities, critical systems, equipment, operations, and persons. This role involves operating multiple electronic security systems, enforcing company policies and criminal laws, and controlling access to company property. The operator will respond to security service requests and alarms, coordinate with public safety and medical personnel during emergencies, and direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic. A key responsibility is conducting preliminary investigations of security violations and preparing detailed reports. The position also requires assessing current physical security measures, security systems, and policies, and making recommendations for enhancements. The successful candidate will be part of a security organization focused on ensuring the safety of personnel and the security of the Bulk Electric System (BES) throughout the Southeast. This high-security environment demands a high standard of mental and physical readiness to deter and defeat physical threats against BES and personnel at Southern Company and its affiliates. Armed security officers work in high-security facilities with strict access control and elevated security procedures to protect BES assets and personnel. This includes work for Southern Company’s Corporate Security Department in security operations centers, generating plants, and other locations relevant to NERC CIP Physical Security Perimeters (PSPs). The position will perform intrusion alarm, video surveillance, and access control monitoring and response to PSP events across the enterprise as part of a 24/7 team trained in NERC CIP Standards and compliance requirements. Specifically, this position will staff the West Physical Security Operations Center (WPSOC) and provide armed security protection to respective locations. Functions include operating video surveillance, intrusion alarm, access control, and telephonic and radio systems. The operator will monitor and respond to various alarms, determine response requirements and priorities, record responses, conduct preliminary investigations, write incident reports, and immediately report violations. They will handle access control issues and dispatch in accordance with established procedures, coordinating with the WPSOC Supervisor. Maintaining knowledge of policies, procedures, and strategies for compliance, and internal certifications related to NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards are essential. The role involves administering and enforcing policies, maintaining computer-based security records, and providing armed security service for Corporate Headquarters, including controlling access. The position also contributes to ensuring Southern Company’s NERC CIP Physical Security Program is consistent and coordinated with other physical security organizations within Southern Company. Alabama Power Company NERC CIP Armed Security Operators are responsible for protecting Southern Company personnel, assets, and interests. This position utilizes armed physical security tactics, screenings, highly technical security event monitoring, and security event response.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work shift work, holidays, overtime, during inclement weather, call out and able to work at designated Company location(s).
  • Minimum 3 years of law enforcement, military, private or industrial security preferred.
  • Must pass the following job prerequisites: psychological test, drug test, annual firearms qualifications, and Internal Threat Program.
  • Must qualify for firearm use and re-qualify annually with the semi-auto pistol.
  • Must qualify for and obtain a valid state firearm permit and driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Knowledge of Software House CCURE is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Avigilon Software is preferred.
  • Understanding of NERC CIP-006 and CIP-014 security standards is helpful.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Superior computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Office, multiple functional computer formats (in-house), etc.
  • Ability to work and make decisions with minimal direct supervision within the prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to relatively complex technical inquiries with regard to access application systems.
  • Ability to have technical proficiency with access application systems functioning at an operator level proficiency.
  • Ability to coordinate and liaison with Operating Company and Corporate Security groups.
  • Ability to evaluate and determine the appropriate action in response to PSP alarms.
  • Must be capable of using sound logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals under highly stressful situations and perform various tasks simultaneously while working as a team.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to administer basic first aid/CPR.
  • Must be able to multi-task and perform computer data entry while callers are on the phone.
  • Ability to stay current with relevant technology.
  • Must demonstrate strong ethics and experience handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Ability to learn and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Ability to direct & control vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  • Ability to wear and maintain personal protection equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical activity, including but not limited to, running, walking, and lifting.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch in accordance with established procedures and help coordinate situations with the WPSOC Supervisor.
  • Maintain relevant knowledge of policies, procedures, and strategies to promote compliance.
  • Maintain required internal certifications related to direct knowledge of NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards.
