About The Position

University of Michigan Health–Sparrow (UMH–Sparrow) in Lansing, Michigan is recruiting a clinical neonatologist to join their team. This is a full-time clinical position that combines high-acuity community neonatology with the benefits of access to University of Michigan academic resources and statewide collaboration. The role involves providing clinical care in a 35-bed Level III NICU and a 12-bed Special Care Nursery. The NICU manages 700–800 admissions annually, with capabilities including high-frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, and therapeutic hypothermia. The team consists of neonatologists, APPs, and residents. The position includes participation in academic case conferences and QI initiatives with Michigan Medicine.

Requirements

  • Completion of a neonatology fellowship.
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in neonatal-perinatal medicine.
  • Licensed as a physician in the State of Michigan.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
  • Proficiency with ventilators, CPAP, umbilical lines, and advanced monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to react calmly and efficiently to life-threatening emergencies.
  • Expert-level data interpretation and diagnostic skills for rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Highly effective in emotional, high-stakes communication with families.
  • Comfortable in a high-acuity, community-based NICU with academic affiliation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized medical care for newborn infants—particularly premature, low-birth-weight, or critically ill babies—primarily within the NICU.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage complex, life-threatening conditions.
  • Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams and provide support to families.
  • Devote time, attention and energy to providing professional medical services that are representative of the highest quality, compassionate medical care.
  • Supervise the medical care of assigned patients.
  • Refer patients requiring medically necessary care to an affiliate of Sparrow Health System, if such services are available, unless specific exceptions apply.
  • Supervise, evaluate and make recommendations regarding office personnel.
  • Actively participate in UMHP and practice level management and operations, including attendance at meetings.
  • Assist with the recruitment and development of additional or replacement physicians.
  • Perform additional services as requested by Vice President, UMHP or designated by the UMHP Board.
  • Engage in educational programs, including teaching residents, interns and medical students.
  • Complete all medical record entries within a reasonable time after patient contact and comply with documentation and coding requirements.
  • Participate in the ongoing development of the Physician’s practice specialty within Hospital, including assisting with policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing and implementing revisions to quality assurance, quality improvement and related programs.
  • Demonstrate good medical citizenship, including complete, legible, timely, and appropriately coded charts and billing documentation.
