The Neonatal Care Specialist (NCS) is a dedicated newborn RN who attends deliveries, assesses and stabilizes newborns immediately after birth, monitoring and providing initial interventions as needed. The NCS assists with newborn care, procedures, and treatments throughout the women’s and children’s service line. The NCS works closely with neonatal nurse practitioners, obstetricians, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, neonatologists, and other nurses. The NCS is responsible for head-to-toe assessment, medication administration, and any ongoing assessments of the newborn until clinical stabilization or higher level of care is determined. The NCS communicates with families, provides updates on the newborn's condition, and offers education related to skin-to-skin care, breastfeeding/newborn nutrition, and newborn care. The NCS also: • Evaluates the family's response to care and teaching and revises the plan of care as needed. • Evaluates patient progress towards goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with other health care team members. • Assumes responsibility for various core unit functions such as quality control, point of care, supply stocking, newborn equipment, and others as directed. • Demonstrates self-direction, communication skills, and teamwork.
