About The Position

Supports design of NDA measurement programs for Y-12, including method selection and instrument performance specification. Performs initial calibrations, qualifications and certifications for instruments and methods. Provides consultation on NDA matters to various facility departments and organizations such as Nuclear Criticality Safety, Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability, Waste Management, and Production Operations. Provides mentoring to other members within Engineering NDA. Responsible for the non-destructive analysis (NDA) of uranium and other radioactive isotopes in various Y-12 processing facilities using portable field instrumentation. Supports the Uranium Holdup Survey Program (UHSP) by maintaining the basis for monitoring and detecting uranium accumulations in processing facilities. Duties involve extensive field time and support of measurement activities in a variety of locations across the plant.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree: Minimum 4 years of relevant experience. OR Master's degree: Minimum 3 year of relevant experience. OR 12 or more years of relevant education, training and/or progressive experience may be considered to satisfy the educational and years of experience required for this posting.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., High School diploma; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
  • DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment.
  • Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
  • This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
  • This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

  • Good organizational and analytical skills as well as excellent problem solving skills and ability to learn techniques for measuring uranium content in typical cases and for difficult and non-ideal scenarios
  • Adept in data analysis, data processing, and data manipulation within multiple database, spreadsheet, and custom software applications
  • Experience and qualification in conducting field measurements in a variety of locations and conditions across the site
  • Preferred work-related experience includes knowledge of nuclear material operations and processes within the Nuclear Weapons Complex
  • Skilled in communication and interactions with a variety of customers and ability to schedule and manage measurement campaigns
  • Knowledge of nuclear and radiation principles and theory along with practical experience with gamma ray and neutron-based NDA measurement instrumentation and NDA measurement software is desired for this position
