About The Position

This position is located at Kingsley Commons Computer Technology Program in Falls Church, VA. It is a .75 FTE (30 hours per week) role with benefits. Fairfax County's Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) offers opportunities for individuals looking for part-time roles to engage with the community and make an impact. NCS Center Leaders plan, prepare, and lead age and ability-appropriate community center activities. They support the 'One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Policy' by developing and facilitating programs for a diverse population. This role involves supervising non-merit staff and volunteers, opening and closing facilities in the absence of supervisors, monitoring equipment and facility care, and completing administrative duties. Responsibilities include collecting and reporting statistical data, ensuring participant safety, responding to emergencies, greeting patrons, handling inquiries, making referrals, accepting payments, and communicating effectively in-person and by phone. The role also includes transporting participants using a center vehicle and maintaining required professional training (first aid, CPR, food manager's certificate, driver's license). The center operates daily, including nights and weekends, six days a week (Monday-Saturday), and the employee must be available to work these hours. NCS Team members engage the community to address changing needs, coordinate strategies, promote a high-performing organization, and support equity-based programs and practices. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education.
  • One year of related experience in a recreation center or facility, OR one year of experience organizing and coordinating public recreation activities or community outreach.
  • Motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Ability to assist center management with the collection and tracking of program data and outcomes needed for compiling administrative reports.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizen groups, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and lead community center activities that are age and ability appropriate.
  • Assist with the development and facilitation of programs and activities that serve a multi-cultural and economically diverse population.
  • Serve in a supervision role for community center non-merit staff (Recreation Leader II and IIIs) and volunteers.
  • Serve as lead, including opening and closing of facilities, in the absence of their site supervisor(s).
  • Monitor the care and maintenance of equipment and facilities of the center.
  • Complete necessary administrative duties in support of center operations.
  • Collect and report required community center statistical data.
  • Ensure safety of participants and respond promptly to emergency situations.
  • Greet center patrons, handle inquiries, make referrals to appropriate resources, and accept payments of fees.
  • Communicate effectively in-person and on the telephone with participants, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Transport participants using center vehicle.
  • Maintain required professional training, such as first aid and CPR, food manager’s certificate and driver’s license.
  • Engage community and resident leaders to develop responses to changing needs using a place-based and population-based approach.
  • Work closely with leadership to coordinate a shared vision, actionable strategies, and support a framework for the county's engagement of community members.
  • Promote a high-performing organization that ensures the work is directly connected to the department and the human services system priorities and outcome areas.
  • Support and promote equity-based programs and practices that address needs and equitable access to opportunities to enhance well-being and community inclusion.
  • Assist in the program delivery duties of the assigned facilities.
  • Ensure staff compliance with operating procedures and safety/security standards.
  • Inform the public of pertinent rules and regulations.
  • Direct residents to private and public resources and programs.
  • Deliver customer service by distributing literature and providing information.
  • Assist as a liaison between County agencies, residents and other community centers.
  • Provide operational support by supervising non-merit personnel of assigned facilities.
  • Assist management in the daily program delivery of several specialized programs and special events at assigned facilities.
  • Assist management in the collection of data and records management necessary for the operation and evaluation of programs.
