Metea Park - Part Time Naturalist
About The Position
This is a part-time, non-exempt, and unclassified position within the Parks & Recreation Department at Metea Park. The Naturalist will be responsible for planning and presenting interpretive and outdoor recreation programs related to natural and cultural history. This role involves publicizing programs, interacting with media, creating exhibits, training volunteers, preparing reports, and assisting with resource management activities such as prescribed burning and exotic plant control. The position also requires maintaining equipment, safely operating equipment, communicating and enforcing park rules, assisting with school groups, and performing building maintenance and cleaning.
Requirements
- Naturalist, education, or natural history education is essential.
- Must be able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Experience, education and/or training in parks and recreation, natural resources, environmental education or interpretation or related field.
- Ability to locate, identify and document wildlife and plants.
- Ability to instruct visitors.
- Ability to develop media presentations and marketing materials.
- Ability to express thoughts verbally and in writing.
- Ability to legally operate a vehicle.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, weekdays and evenings to suit program needs.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities
- Plan and present interpretive and outdoor recreation programs for all ages dealing with natural and cultural history subjects.
- Publicize these programs and interact with media representatives.
- Create exhibits on various subjects.
- Train and supervise volunteers.
- Prepare reports and forms.
- Assist with resource management activities, including prescribed burning and exotic plant control.
- Maintain equipment, and safely operate equipment.
- Communicate and enforce park rules and regulations.
- Assist with school groups as needed.
- Assist with building maintenance and cleaning.
- Other duties as assigned.
