About The Position

Naturalists are assigned responsibilities involving the development and presentation of environmental educational programs for visitors at state parks and other tourism locations. Incumbents are also responsible for trail and volunteer programs at the assigned location. This is a leadership level role where employees will be assigned responsibilities involving the supervision of other full-time employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental or biological science or related field AND one (1) year of experience in environmental education or ecology or closely related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one (1) year of experience in environmental education or ecology or closely related work for each year of the required education.
  • Physical requirements will include the ability to lead walking tours and navigate trails, regular bending, stooping, and carrying items up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Scheduled hours will require flexibility, including holidays, weekends, or events, based on the needs of the agency.
  • Some locations will require a valid Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Develops environmental educational programs for resort and park visitors to include: organizing activities; interpreting the natural and cultural resources of the park area; mapping and leading nature walks; developing brochures and the text for educational displays; constructing and maintaining trails and displays within park nature centers.
  • Develops and conducts educational programs for schools, scout groups, and others at locations that may be outside the park itself.
  • Prepares and submits required reports, evaluations and visitor surveys.
  • Coordinates the activities of seasonal staff and volunteers who are assigned to the naturalist.
