About The Position

The position of Natural Resources Coordinator is primarily responsible for overall program support for the Natural Resources Division and programs and is a great opportunity for someone to learn all about the valuable work AVCP does protecting our subsistence way of life. This is a central position that can successfully organize, multi-task, and assist NR Division staff and will gain in-depth knowledge of AVCP and the NR Division operations, services, partnerships, and associations. They will be the central point of contact to help ensure program operations are successful and in compliance with internal and external contracts, grant regulations, MOA’s, etc.

  • Excellent documentation skills and attention to detail with sound and accurate judgement.
  • Understanding of basic grant management and budgeting.
  • Strong computer and software skills, ability to learn new technology.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A valid Alaska Driver’s License and safe driving record to qualify for AVCP Commercial Vehicle Insurance.
  • The ability to travel in small planes is required for village-related travel.
  • At least two (2) years education or experience in the areas of natural resources or rural development.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of work experience in a natural resources or related field, or program coordination and management, or any combination of experience and training which provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven record of planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with Yup’ik cultures and traditions is strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in Yup’ik or Cup’ik is preferred.
  • Exercises tact and diplomacy in working with other departments and agencies.
  • Includes appropriate people in decision-making process.
  • A bachelor’s or associate degree is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor communication flow for the program incoming calls, e-mails, and in-person contacts.
  • Maintain organization of notes, communications, and strategy positions, for subsistence committee or organization meetings that are attended or monitored by NRD staff.
  • Document communication with partners and agencies, including State, Federal, Tribal, conservation agencies, and organizations.
  • Attend meetings as assigned and take notes of actions occurring at the meeting.
  • Assist division and program staff with research and analysis of ongoing and emerging issues and developments relating to subsistence resources and program advocacy.
  • Maintain an activity and events calendar for regional, statewide, national, and international events; ensure program and administrative timelines are met by calendaring events and project assignments including grant deadlines or requirements.
  • Assist NR Division staff to track and manage public relations and communications to share with Tribes and post updates on the NR Facebook page and AVCP media.
  • Oversee division and department travel for both staff and non-staff via AVCP’s electronic travel software/travel support agency.
  • Oversee all department purchasing through AVCP’s electronic finance software.
  • Assist the director in supporting the healthy financial management of program budgets and grants by maintaining organization of documents for grants within the department, including specific regulations, allowable expenses, expenditures, and reports.
  • Assist in the pursuit of supplemental program funding through all available channels such as Grant Writing, Legislative Appropriations, or contract negotiations.
  • Travels to appropriate meetings within and outside of the region to represent AVCP interests and activities on subjects pertaining to Natural Resources issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of written reports on the status of all program activities for submission to AVCP administration at regular meetings and other entities on a timely basis.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of the department and clientele.
