What we are looking for: The State Forest Program in Tillamook District manages 251,000 acres of State Forest land, about one third of the State-owned forest land in Oregon, to secure the greatest permanent value of these lands to the State by maintaining healthy productive and sustainable forest ecosystems. Management consists of reforestation and stand management, sales of forest products, engineering, including property line surveying; road design, construction and maintenance, recreation management and general administration of the growth and harvest of the forest in a cost-effective and environmentally sound manner. The Forester in this position will assist in State Forest Management. The primary functions are performing the various technical tasks associated with the sale of forest products and related silviculture to implement the Northwest Oregon Forest Management Plan.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry, or a closely related natural resources program.
  • Three years of experience in Forestry, State Forest Management, or a closely related natural resource program.
  • Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to make technical decisions related to timber sale layout, posting harvest boundaries, harvest design, road location, and timber cruising size, grade, and defect of stands.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Performing the various technical tasks associated with the sale of forest products and related silviculture to implement the Northwest Oregon Forest Management Plan.
  • Assist in State Forest Management.
  • Evaluate harvesting practices, logging systems, and tree selection on timber sales.
  • Make on the ground decisions relative to contract compliance with Oregon Fire Laws, State Forest Management Plan, Habitat Conservation Plan and Forest Practices Rules.
  • Collect stand data and information.
