About The Position

This role supports Front Office Trading, Middle Office Risk, and Back Office Settlements teams by providing fundamental and technical analyses and research of commodity markets. The analyst will evaluate the supply portfolio and asset position in relation to the regional market and recommend trading strategies and optimization opportunities. The primary focus will be on natural gas (spot and forward, physical, and financial), coal, diesel, and propane markets. The work contributes to supplying safe, reliable energy and achieving the Sustainable Energy Plan.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in either a business-related field (e.g., Economics, Finance, Accounting), Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Engineering, or Information Technology.
  • Ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including strong presentation skills and the ability to listen and respond effectively and influence others.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's degree in a quantitative field is valued.
  • Hands-on work experience in energy commodities (e.g., natural gas, power, oil) is valued.
  • Knowledge of financial concepts (e.g., portfolio management, valuation, opportunity costs) and electric and gas utility operations is valued.
  • Experience using ETRM systems, analytical software products, and/or coding languages (e.g., SQL, Python, R, VBA) is valued.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with the Front Office energy trading team to assist with short-term trading decisions, optimize contracts and physical assets, develop the gas supply portfolio plan, and improve forecast accuracy and variance analysis.
  • Analyzing trading strategies, evaluating transaction effectiveness, identifying market and operational opportunities to add value, and communicating strategies and findings to the Front Office and other impacted personnel.
  • Performing ad-hoc sensitivity and risk analyses around our gas portfolio and proposed energy transactions, focusing on local market pricing, demand forecasts, regional liquidity, transportation, and basis risk.
  • Analyzing and reporting fundamental and technical Western US, North American, and global natural gas market trends, including historical prices and data, structural industry changes, and supply/demand balances.
  • Interfacing with personnel across the organization in regards to natural gas and generation fuel market information and our organization's operations and performance in these markets.
