Position Overview: Reporting to the Head of Commercial Operations, the Natural Gas Analyst supports AlphaGen's commercial strategy by analyzing natural gas markets, fuel supply agreements, and generation asset margins. This role develops forecasts, conducts quantitative analysis, and provides actionable market intelligence that supports fuel procurement, portfolio optimization, risk management, and trading activities. The Natural Gas Analyst monitors natural gas market fundamentals, evaluates fuel-related opportunities and risks, and develops recommendations that enhance profitability across AlphaGen's generation portfolio. This position works closely with Commercial Operations and Risk to support strategic decision-making and optimize fuel-related outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Energy Management, or a related discipline.
  • 4-7 years of experience in natural gas markets, energy analytics, commodity trading support, fuel procurement, market risk, or commercial operations.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience working with large datasets and developing forecasting or financial models.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex market information into actionable business recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience within an Independent Power Producer (IPP), utility, energy marketer, pipeline company, commodity trading organization, or natural gas producer.
  • Understanding of wholesale power markets and generation asset economics.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, VBA, Power BI, Tableau, R, or similar analytical tools.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze natural gas market fundamentals, including supply, demand, storage, weather, LNG exports, pipeline infrastructure, and regulatory developments.
  • Develop short-, medium-, and long-term forecasts for natural gas prices, basis differentials, transportation costs, and fuel supply conditions.
  • Analyze historical market data, pricing trends, and economic indicators to identify emerging risks and opportunities.
  • Maintain awareness of regional developments and assess potential impacts on AlphaGen's fuel costs and generation margins.
  • Support the development of AlphaGen's forward market view and fuel strategy recommendations.
  • Prepare timely reports, presentations, and dashboards that communicate market trends, key findings, and actionable recommendations to management.
  • Analyze fuel supply agreements, transportation contracts, storage arrangements, and other commercial agreements to identify value enhancement opportunities and contractual risks.
  • Assess market, operational, and regulatory risks associated with fuel procurement and commodity price volatility.
  • Develop recommendations to mitigate fuel-related financial and operational risks.
  • Support fuel budgeting, hedge evaluations, and risk management activities.
