About The Position

This position is responsible for recruiting interested individuals for the Native American Cancer Project and delivering the cancer screening education program, My Health My Choice, to women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and their supporters. The role involves providing health education programming and completing data collection for the project "Improving Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening for Native American Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)." The Health Educator will coordinate closely with other community health and social service agencies for a Northern Arizona University grant through the American Cancer Society and the Center for Native American Cancer Health Equity.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the political, cultural and socio-economic environment of the urban Native American communities throughout Southern Arizona.
  • Possess awareness of and respect for the diversity of Native cultures and traditions.
  • Working knowledge of community resources and the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other organizations.
  • Conduct basic research by collecting, organizing, and managing data efficiently.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of participant information and sensitive data.
  • Operate computers, digital copiers, and other modern office machines efficiently.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, staff, and external partners.
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive documents in a professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of client confidentiality.
  • Associate’s Degree in the field of Health Education, Social Services or Health related studies or closely related field; AND Two (2) years work experience in community health education which includes public service program planning, development, management or marketing/ media; OR Any equivalent combination of Education and Experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties.
  • Must possess valid Arizona Driver’s License
  • Must pass Driver Insurance Carrier’s requirements
  • Must obtain a HIPAA certification within 2 weeks of hire.
  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within 3 months of hire.
  • Must pass Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance (Class I & II)
  • Must pass and submit to periodic/random drug testing

Nice To Haves

  • Possess understanding of disability and/or has worked with people with IDD.
  • Skill in case management and in establishing and maintaining control over case plans, timetable, priorities and agendas.
  • Experience working with and/or for Native American communities.

Responsibilities

  • Complete required Institutional Review Board training and any other institutionally required trainings.
  • Obtain and/or design health education programming and data collection training useful for individual client and/or community education.
  • Support recruitment and consent of research participants by responding to individuals interested in participating in the education program, completing an eligibility screening with each contact, and then scheduling the delivery of the education program for those eligible.
  • Provide assistance and advisement regarding cancer screenings and needs of Native American women with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities (IDD).
  • Provide a caregiver/support person orientation session for each client prior to providing the program.
  • Provide six sessions of the education program to Native American women with IDD and their support person.
  • Document all case management encounters in client’s electronic health record.
  • Maintain active working relationships with relevant tribal and non-tribal agencies and programs for referral and care coordination purposes.
  • Plan and deliver group education sessions on-site and in various community settings with focus on those topics identified in the contract scope of work.
  • Educate staff from other organizations about TIC services and how to refer clients.
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of Wellness Department activities.
  • Prepare the required reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
