Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a national outbound strategy that balances service level, cost, and perishability/risk.
  • Forecast outbound volume, capacity, and seasonal fluctuations, and align resources (carriers, trailers, workforce) accordingly.
  • Set KPIs and SLAs for outbound operations (e.g. on-time delivery, freight cost per unit, trailer utilization, cold chain integrity, damage/spoilage rates).
  • Select, negotiate, and manage relationships with carriers, freight providers, and third parties, ensuring competitive pricing, service reliability, and cold chain capability.
  • Maintain empty trailer pools, oversee backhauls or return loads when relevant, and optimize transportation routing to reduce cost and transit time.
  • Monitor carrier performance (on-time pickup, transit time, damage/spoilage, compliance with cold chain temperature controls).
  • Standardize outbound operations best practices across all sites (loading, staging, grouping orders).
  • Implement continuous improvement projects focusing on packaging, load consolidation, route planning, trailer loading efficiency, cold chain integrity, minimizing waste.
  • Use data analytics and reporting (daily/weekly/monthly dashboards) to spot bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and deviation from targets.
  • Ensure all outbound shipments adhere to food safety and cold chain protocols (temperature control, packaging, handling).
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to transportation of perishable/frozen/refrigerated goods.
  • Oversee training and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for staff involved in outbound loading, packing, temperature monitoring, etc.
  • Work closely with Customer Service / Client Relations to ensure outbound delays or service issues are communicated proactively.
  • Collaborate with Sales / Account Management to understand delivery expectations, customer constraints, and recovery protocols in case of missed SLAs.
  • Coordinate with Quality Assurance and Cold Storage teams to reduce spoilage / damage claims.
  • Develop and manage outbound transportation and shipping budget.
  • Monitor cost per unit, freight spend, accessorial charges.
  • Identify cost savings opportunities (e.g. more efficient packaging, better carrier contracts, route optimization).
  • Evaluate trade-offs between cost vs speed vs risk, esp. for perishable items where delays or temperature excursions can result in product loss.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of managers/supervisors across multiple sites.
  • Ensure consistent performance, accountability, and alignment with goals.
  • Build and sustain a workforce trained in outbound best practices, safety, cold chain protocols, and problem solving.
  • Drive the adoption of technology and tools (WMS, transportation management, temperature sensors / telematics) to increase visibility and control.
