MV DC Systems, Technical Lead

FluidstackNew York, NY
$208,000 - $263,000

About The Position

We are seeking a Technical Lead for our MV DC Systems team. This role is crucial in designing the medium-voltage DC distribution systems that will power gigawatt-scale AI campuses. The team is responsible for everything from architecture to safety cases, operating in a space where standards are still evolving. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about making humanity more free through AI and are driven to build civilization-scale infrastructure. Our operating principles include extreme ownership, velocity, first principles thinking, and a deep engagement with the problem space. The Product Engineering, DC Systems Team specifically focuses on designing MVDC distribution systems for gigawatt-scale AI campuses. Key challenges include selecting the optimal voltage level, topology, and grounding scheme for these systems, ensuring robust fault behavior and cost-effectiveness. The team also works on proving the viability of fully converter-interfaced networks through detailed EMT-level fault and stability analysis, and developing protection strategies capable of clearing DC faults within microseconds. A significant part of the role involves building a safety case for MVDC distribution in advance of established standards.

Requirements

  • 12+ years in power systems or power electronics.
  • Direct MVDC or HVDC system design experience (shipboard MVDC, HVDC converter stations, or grid-scale converter-dominated networks), designed end to end.
  • Ownership of the system-level story, including architecture, grounding, fault behavior, and stability of converter-dominated networks.
  • Ability to articulate a DC fault sequence from initiation to clearing.
  • Fluency in EMT simulation (PSPSCAD/EMTDC) and experience using it to prove designs.
  • Experience building defensible safety cases ahead of immature standards.
  • Experience leading small technical teams and defining their first deliverables.
  • Ability to identify critical evidence and make decisive calls on concepts.

Nice To Haves

  • SSCB and DC breaker ecosystem knowledge.
  • Depth in DC grounding and insulation coordination.
  • Islanded or behind-the-meter system experience.
  • Standards committee participation.

Responsibilities

  • Architect MVDC distribution for gigawatt-scale campuses, including selecting voltage level, topology, and grounding scheme, and defending these choices based on fault behavior, stability, and cost.
  • Own the system EMT model and conduct fault and stability analysis to validate the performance of fully converter-interfaced networks.
  • Define the protection philosophy in collaboration with the protection engineer and develop a rigorous safety case for areas where standards are still emerging.
  • Lead the DC Systems team, define its initial deliverables, and manage technical interfaces with the SST and facility electrical teams.
  • Drive vendor strategy for SSCBs, converters, and DC-rated components, identifying and designing around ecosystem gaps.

Benefits

  • Commitment to pay equity and transparency.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity Employer status.
