About The Position

The Department of Theatre Dance at Santa Clara University seeks a Musical Director/Vocal Coach to teach THTR 29/129 – Rehearsal and Performance. This role involves music and vocal direction for the Theatre and Dance department's spring production of “42nd Street.” The successful candidate will recruit, rehearse, and conduct the orchestra during the show's run, and collaborate with the stage director on vocal coaching for production numbers. The position also requires regular meetings with the director, choreographer, and design faculty to realize the production's vision. The university especially encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds.

Requirements

  • MA/MFA in Theatre or Music (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Previous teaching at the university level.
  • Ability to carry out the professional duties of position; working with department director, choreographer, designers, technical director and a student work crew.
  • Collaborative work style, strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Commitment to teaching theatre through production, within a liberal arts context.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive musical direction and vocal coach experience in both professional venues and university settings.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct auditions and callbacks for the student cast.
  • Conduct seven weeks of evening rehearsals.
  • Identify and secure the show orchestra for rehearsals and the run of the show.
  • Attend all design and production meetings as required.
  • Attend all day technical rehearsals.
  • Fulfill other instructional or academic duties such as attending faculty meetings or department special events, as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
