About The Position

The music therapy intern program is a PAID internship that provides intense working experience in music therapy. We place an emphasis on candidates with a strong background in cultural awareness and issues related to equity and diversity. We are interested in supporting students while working from an equity lens, and are committed to educating and supporting students who reflect the diversity of the patients and families we serve. Music therapy interns develop and provide music therapy interventions under supervision of a Board Certified Music Therapist at Children's MN. Music therapy is an evidence-based allied health profession that uses the clinical applications of music to meet individualized non-musical goals. These goals could be physical, cognitive, emotional, or social. At Children’s Minnesota, patients are seen for individual, group, or family music therapy sessions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in Music Therapy.
  • Strong background in cultural awareness and issues related to equity and diversity.
  • Ability to work from an equity lens.
  • Commitment to educating and supporting students who reflect the diversity of the patients and families served.

  • Meet all AMTA designated competencies required to sit for board certification, including: Music Foundations (Music Theory and History, Composition and Arranging Skills, Major Performance Medium Skills, Functional Music Skills, Conducting Skills, Movement Skills), Clinical Foundations (Therapeutic Applications, Therapeutic Principles, The Therapeutic Relationship), and Music Therapy (Foundations and Principles, Client Assessment, Treatment Planning, Therapy Implementation, Therapy Evaluation, Documentation, Termination/Discharge Planning, Professional Role/Ethics, Interprofessional Collaboration, Supervision and Administration, Research Methods).

Responsibilities

  • Participate in clinical supervision with board certified music therapists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Observe, co-lead and lead individual, family and group sessions.
  • Be responsible for their own schedule and caseload during the leadership portion of the internship.
