About The Position

The role of the Music Therapist involves providing comprehensive music therapy assessments and personalized treatment interventions to meet the psychosocial, developmental, rehabilitative, and psychological needs of pediatric patients, siblings, and families. They play a vital role in helping patients and families cope with various challenges such as illness, injury, disability, hospitalization, and end-of-life situations. Key responsibilities include designing and conducting individual and group music therapy sessions, maintaining accurate documentation of patient progress, managing supplies and inventory, nurturing community and donor relationships, and supervising the training of new music therapists and interns.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Music Therapy from an American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved university required.
CBMT Music Therapist Board Certified by Certification Board for Music Therapists
Proficiency in planning and executing therapeutic Music interventions tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient and family.
Musical proficiency in voice, guitar, piano, percussion, and music recording technology.
Demonstrated expertise in clinical practice in the field of music therapy.
Adherence to AMTA standards of practice, code of ethics, and professional competencies.
Ability to adapt quickly to emergent needs in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite applications.
Knowledge of a wide array of evidence-based music therapy interventions suitable for various age groups and developmental stages.
Understanding of child development, relevant medical diagnoses and treatments, and human behavior, including individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.
Familiarity with individual and group behavior dynamics and techniques to facilitate communication and socialization.
Understanding of the key components of medical records documentation reflecting the patient/family treatment trajectory.
Proficiency in active and empathic listening.
Ability to assess one's own performance and that of others to drive improvements or corrective actions.
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to identify alternative solutions or approaches.

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree preferred.
At least two years medical music therapy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Facilitates effective music therapy interventions that are age and developmentally appropriate for pediatric patients and families of various demographic and multicultural backgrounds.
Assesses, prioritizes, individualizes, and evaluates plan of care based on patient/family psychosocial, developmental, emotional, and rehabilitative needs.
Promotes pain management, positive coping, and compliance with medical procedures through individualized music therapy interventions.
Develops therapeutic presence and relationships with families that are caring, trusting, reliable, and beneficial.
Identifies, assesses, and responds to individualized family needs and provides timely and effective interventions.
Provides continuity through recovery and hospital discharge.
Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team to integrate goals, improve patient outcomes, and meet the individual needs of each patient and family.
Communicates all pertinent patient and family information gathered to health care team. Attends multi-disciplinary rounds and patient care conferences.
Supports the LPCH Foundation and marketing department in fundraising through interviews, videos, and patient generated materials such as song recordings, photographs, video, program data, and clinical stories. Corresponds with and maintains positive relations with community members and donors.
Follows hospital guidelines for infection control processes to maintain a safe environment for patients and families.
Evaluates, prioritizes, and responds to music therapy consults in a timely manner.
Maintains current and relevant music repertoire of patient preferred music and effectively incorporates music technology and other sound media in patient care.
Seeks opportunity for professional development and growth and integrates new knowledge and skill into practice.
Appropriately prioritizes workflow based on patient/family care needs and administrative responsibilities.
Applies theoretical knowledge of the impact of music and the mechanisms of music on human physiology, psychology, development, and behavioral responses.
Participates in tasks, initiatives, and/or committees that support departmental operations and/or enhances one¿s professional development.
Provides bereavement support and legacy building to patients and families at the end of life.
Assists in onboarding, training, supervising, and providing feedback to new music therapy employees and music therapy internship/practicum students.
Makes necessary referrals to other team members and/or community resources.
Supports special departmental events (Child Life and Creative Arts seasonal events) and music-related events (visiting artists, concerts, workshops, etc.).
Documents and reports clearly and concisely, maintaining consistent records in hospital charting system.
Engages in HIPAA best practices for consenting patients/ families to release patient generated materials (Stanford Children's Health Consent Form).
Maintains a good rapport and professional working relationship with all inter/intra departmental personnel. Conducts in-service training to other disciplines within Stanford Children's Health to educate others on the use of music therapy and its role in the therapeutic process to promote healing and enhance coping skills.
Maintains instrument inventory and music supplies and ensures that work areas remain organized, safe, and professional.
