About The Position

Under general supervision, teaches classes in the field of music to students in grades K through 12, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability.

  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in written and oral form.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform non-instructional duties as assigned.
  • Strong understanding of the growth and development of assigned students.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Must be fully licensed as a Music Teacher (K-12) [00800] or eligible for licensure.
  • Strong background in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study/Essential Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in the field of music, which may include general, instrumental, or choral music to assigned students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study/Essential Standards.
  • Provides instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation and the ability to make qualitative judgments about music.
  • Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and artistic abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive studio environment.
  • Instructs students in proper care and use of instruments and equipment and organizes storage areas and controls the use of materials and instruments to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Evaluates each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding.
  • Selects and requisitions instructional materials, books, instruments, etc., and maintains inventory reports.
  • Maintains professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities and university courses.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Cooperates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities.
  • Performs other related work as required.
