About The Position

This part-time position serves students in grades K–12 across three school campuses. All students receive special education services and present with diverse learning profiles, including autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, complex communication needs, and other disabilities. The ideal candidate uses music intentionally and therapeutically not only to teach musical skills, but as a primary vehicle for supporting communication, social emotional development, motor skills, and individualized IEP goals. This role requires flexibility, clinical or educational creativity, a trauma-informed approach, and a passion for serving students with complex needs.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in at least one instrument and broad musical knowledge across genres and styles.
  • Experience or comfort working with AAC systems and students with complex communication needs.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and positive behavior support practices and strong interpersonal and collaborative communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for multi-campus travel
  • Satisfactory background checks

Nice To Haves

  • Music Therapist Board Certification in Music Therapy (MT-BC) issued by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).
  • Connecticut licensure as a Music Therapist, or eligibility to obtain licensure through the CT Department of Public Health.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Therapy from an AMTA-approved program.
  • Experience providing music therapy services to children and/or adolescents with disabilities in a school or clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with IEP processes, related service documentation, and special education law (IDEA).
  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, or a related field with substantial equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students with disabilities in a school, clinical, or therapeutic program.
  • Strong working knowledge of adaptive music strategies and differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
  • Connecticut teaching certification in Music, or eligibility for certification.
