About The Position

The Salvation Army's North & Central Illinois Division is seeking a Music Ministry Instructor for the 'Let the Music Begin' program. This role involves working with children and adults to plan and implement music and creative arts programs, including teaching theory, performance (brass, vocal, guitar, piano, ukulele, etc.), and creative arts (dance, drama, theatre, visual arts). The program aims to assist, resource, equip, and enhance the Corps' Sunday worship and music/arts programs, reinforcing the mission and vision of the Music & Creative Arts Department through education. The instructor will help prepare participants for recitals and the end-of-year LTMB concert, encouraging them to develop musical abilities, self-esteem, and positive engagement. The role also involves encouraging attendance at summer camps for further talent development and spiritual decision-making, and gaining knowledge of Salvation Army music and programs. Maintaining a positive work atmosphere, adhering to conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional communication are essential. Compliance with "Safe from Harm" Certification is required.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years music experience working with children/adults.
  • Proficiency in music theory and in a primary instrument
  • Valid Driver’s license/MVR clearance.
  • A strong commitment to support and promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • A personal knowledge of music, including performance, education and theory.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Must be a team player, self starter, and follow through with assignments until completion.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • Live out a personal faith in Jesus Chris, demonstrate love for God, and show compassion for others.
  • Proven leadership ability.
  • Heart for evangelism and knowledge of the Bible.
  • Emotional and Spiritual Maturity.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, or working towards a degree in music, or extensive experience teaching music.
  • Performance experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • To educate and train the future leaders in Music and Creative Arts ministry in The Salvation Army
  • To teach and spread the Gospel to young people of NCI through music and creative arts.
  • Begin each class period with a prayer and a scripture verse.
  • Work within the schools and/or Corps to lead or assist in music or other arts programs as assigned. Implement the lesson plans and curriculum which will be provided by the corps music director, lead music teacher, or LTMB Manager and/or DMCA.
  • With the corps leadership, help plan the LTMB recitals at the corps and help prep the corps music program to participate in the LTMB concert at the end of each school year.
  • Encourage participants to work towards a goal and sense of accomplishment in developing musical abilities. Encourage participants to discover and develop skills and talents that will heighten their self-esteem, increase school/program pride, and involve them in positive activities.
  • Assist with ensuring the music performances and activities heighten the awareness of the purpose of the Corps in the community.
  • Encourage participants to attend summer camps which will lead them to develop further talents and make spiritual decisions.
  • Must be willing to gain knowledge of the Salvation Army music and programs.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere through appropriate conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional and appropriate communication practices.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army’s “Safe from Harm” Certification.
  • All other duties as assigned.
