About The Position

Performs a wide variety of administrative and clerical duties to help ensure the ongoing operation of the museum facilities and grounds, including providing regional and local historic information to the public; assists in regional and local historic research; organizes and keeps inventory of historic artifacts and conducts educational tours of museum. Responsible for staffing the museum at the Wheat Ridge Historical Park, answering questions, scheduling and guiding tours, and providing miscellaneous services to visitors. Also responsible for filing and cataloging donations with in collaboration with Wheat Ridge Historical Society volunteers. Wheat Ridge was founded during the 1859 Gold Rush as a rest stop for miners and later named for its golden wheat fields. As unsuccessful miners turned to farming, the area thrived with orchards, vegetable fields, and later, greenhouses, earning the title “Carnation City.” Incorporated in 1969, Wheat Ridge now offers a central location with easy access to Denver and the Rocky Mountains. It operates as a home-rule city with a council-manager government, where the elected council sets policy, and the manager oversees daily operations and budgeting.

Requirements

  • No formal education or training required, but education and/or experience with museums, tours, history, anthropology, or related fields and/or areas is preferred
  • Ability to lead tours and instruct and oversee a group of youth and/or young adults.
  • Ability to enforce safety regulations firmly.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, volunteers and those of other agencies.
  • Ability to hear, focus on close work, and use hands to fingers.
  • Ability to bend, crouch or stoop, reach, climb, lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing less than 24 lbs.
  • Ability to intermittently sit, stand and walk.

Responsibilities

  • Staffs the museum information desk; serves as initial point of contact with varied members of the public.
  • Answers telephones, schedules tours, program participants and other receptionist duties as needed.
  • Presents talks and leads tours providing general information relating to the historical themes of the park.
  • Creates exhibits as needed.
  • Presents programs to children and assists teacher with their visit.
  • Develops positive relations with visitors; provides information concerning facility and program(s) to visitors.
  • Coordinate with the Wheat Ridge Historical Society as needed.
  • Document and submit building and grounds maintenance concerns via a shift summary report to Supervisor.
  • Complete light cleaning and organization throughout the buildings at the Historical Park.
  • Staff are responsible for securing their own substitutes in their absence, within reasonable advance notice.
