About The Position

Museum Assistants help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging experience for visitors to The Phillips Collection. This public-facing position combines visitor service, gallery support, and basic security responsibilities. Museum Assistants assist with protecting the collection, supporting exhibitions and programs, and responding appropriately to visitor needs and safety concerns.

Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Friendly, professional, and comfortable working with the public.
  • Ability to remain attentive while working in a gallery environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable and punctual, with flexibility to work weekends and special events.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Interest in museums, art, visitor services, or security.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous museum, gallery, visitor services, hospitality, or security experience.
  • Current university or college student, or recent graduate, particularly in art, museum studies, security, hospitality, or a related field.
  • Interest in learning about museum security operations and systems, including CCTV.
  • Knowledge of modern or contemporary art.
  • Fluency in a second language.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a welcoming and attentive presence throughout the galleries and public spaces.
  • Help protect the museum's collection and exhibitions through observation and awareness.
  • Assist visitors with general questions about the museum, exhibitions, and facilities.
  • Communicate museum policies and procedures in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Observe and report safety concerns, unusual activity, or incidents to Security Supervisors.
  • Provide appropriate assistance during medical, safety, or other emergencies.
  • Use radios, phones, and basic computer systems as needed.
  • Learn and follow museum security procedures and become familiar with basic security systems.
  • Support exhibitions, programs, and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain a professional and collaborative working environment.
  • Completely required training and onboarding.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
