About The Position

We are looking for a Senior Java & Murex Developer with hands-on experience inside the Murex MX.3 platform—not solely with systems that feed trades into it. The role builds and supports Murex configuration, interfaces, and Java services across the full trade lifecycle, from front-office trade capture through middle- and back-office processing. The successful candidate understands how trades move front-to-back through a capital markets business and writes clean, well-tested Java, with practical experience in TDD, BDD, and mocking. This is a 12-month contract with a possible extension, based in Toronto in a hybrid work arrangement. The position requires 8+ years of software development experience, including 4+ years of hands-on Murex experience. The work includes direct MX.3 configuration and development, Murex integrations and reporting, batch and end-of-day processing, and platform upgrades and releases. The consultant will deliver changes across front-, middle-, and back-office workflows, collaborate with business teams, and diagnose production issues end-to-end. They will also design and build Java 11+/17 services and Spring Boot microservices, apply sound software design and performance practices, and contribute to testing, code reviews, CI/CD, and Agile delivery.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years working directly in Murex MX.3 through configuration, development, or support; experience only building systems that send trades to Murex does not meet this requirement.
  • Practical experience with at least two of the following: MxML Exchange, Datamart, pre-trade or post-trade workflows, Murex event and contract lifecycle, or Murex batch/EOD.
  • Ability to explain Murex's role in a bank's architecture and its connections to upstream and downstream systems.
  • Clear understanding of the front-to-back trade lifecycle, not only front-office trade capture.
  • Working knowledge of middle-office functions including trade validation, P&L attribution, risk and limits, market data, and EOD controls.
  • Working knowledge of back-office functions including confirmations, settlements, payments, accounting entries, and reconciliations.
  • In-depth experience with at least one asset class, such as Fixed Income, FX, Interest Rate Derivatives, Equities, or Securities Lending.
  • At least 8 years of professional Java development experience, using Java 11+/17, with strong command of collections, generics, streams, exception handling, the memory model, and multithreading.
  • Experience with Spring Boot, REST APIs, SQL (Oracle, Sybase, or SQL Server), and messaging (IBM MQ, Kafka, or JMS).
  • Ability to discuss design trade-offs, design patterns, and performance tuning with concrete examples from personal work.
  • Proven day-to-day use of TDD.
  • Hands-on experience with JUnit 5 and Mockito, including mocks, stubs, spies, argument captors, and interaction verification.
  • Experience writing BDD scenarios using Gherkin/Cucumber and connecting them to step definitions.
  • Candidates listing TDD, BDD, or mocking should expect live technical questions and a short coding exercise.

Nice To Haves

  • Murex certification or formal Murex training.
  • Experience with a Murex upgrade, such as 3.1.x version migrations, or a greenfield Murex implementation.
  • Exposure to regulatory reporting, such as EMIR, Dodd-Frank, or CSA trade reporting.
  • Angular or TypeScript experience for internal tools and dashboards.
  • Unix/Linux shell scripting and experience with AutoSys or Control-M scheduling.
  • Level 3 production support experience for 24x7 trading systems.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, customize, and extend Murex MX.3, including workflows, static data, trade templates, and event processing.
  • Build and maintain Murex integrations using MxML Exchange, Murex web services, and messaging layers such as MQ, Kafka, and JMS.
  • Develop and support Murex Datamart extractions, end-of-day and batch processing, and downstream reporting.
  • Support Murex upgrades, environment refreshes, regression testing, and release migrations.
  • Deliver changes across the full trade flow, including front-office trade capture and pricing; middle-office trade validation, P&L, risk, limits, and market data; and back-office confirmations, settlements, accounting, payments, and SWIFT messaging.
  • Work with traders and middle-office, operations, finance, and risk teams to translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Analyze and resolve production issues end-to-end, tracing trades from booking through settlement and accounting.
  • Design and build Java 11+/17 services and Spring Boot microservices around the Murex platform.
  • Write production code using TDD, unit tests, and behavior-driven acceptance tests.
  • Apply SOLID principles, design patterns, concurrency practices, and performance tuning.
  • Participate in code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile delivery.
