About The Position

This is a sworn part-time law enforcement position that involves protecting life and property at City of Ann Arbor facilities. Under the supervision of a Police Supervisor, the Municipal Safety Officer is responsible for building security for the Larcom City Hall. The Municipal Safety Officer may be assigned to work building security at other City owned facilities.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 21 years of age at the time of hire
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent college credits (60) is required at the time of hire
  • Must be MCOLES certified/certifiable at the time of hire (which includes, among other things, possessing a valid drivers’ license)
  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Law enforcement principles and the criminal justice system
  • Use of firearms and other modern police equipment
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
  • Ability to exercise independent, good sound judgment
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in stressful situations
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with various types of people
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical endurance and agility under frequently adverse conditions
  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions, wrestling, and handcuffing, use of self-defense techniques.
  • Move and lift up to 20 lbs., such as mail, files, and supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general armed security in the Guy C. Larcom Building
  • Prevent unauthorized access to facilities
  • Respond to emergency situations or situations where individuals may exhibit threatening behaviors, using appropriate de-escalation techniques
  • Make periodic rounds of the facility to monitor for security threats and, if any, report them immediately
  • Direct customers to the proper locations
  • Assist guest services staff as needed
  • Investigate security concerns and threats
  • Report any unusual activity to management immediately
  • Document incidents and submit daily reports
  • Interact with City staff to understand security concerns
  • Monitor security systems (cameras, duress systems) throughout the day for potential security threats or other issues
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
