About The Position

The Lead Municipal Mechanic Technician is an integral part of our commitment to excellence across Municipal Contracts throughout the State. This vital role is crucial in upholding the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency for Roberts Hawaii’s Municipal Bus fleet. By expertly performing and supervising vehicle maintenance and repairs on all company buses, vans, and support vehicles assigned to Municipal Contracts, the Lead Mechanic Technician ensures that our fleet operates smoothly and safely. This role supports the Maintenance Supervisor with technical expertise, coordinates workflows efficiently, and mentors fellow mechanics, fostering a culture of high maintenance standards. This role ensures we deliver safe, reliable, and on-time transportation to the public, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted provider.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of five (5) years of work-related experience as a Mechanic II; and/or training (e.g., technical/trade school preferred); or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Able to calculate math functions such as addition, subtraction, and division
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
  • Minimum five (5) ASE certificates (e.g., Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Engines, Power-train (drive-line), Air Conditioning, Transmission, Engine Diagnosis, etc.) or Hawaii State Mechanic License
  • Must have a minimum Type 3 License with a current, valid traffic abstract
  • Must own hand tools
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays
  • Must be able to travel to Maui and Hawaii Island (Hilo/Kona)
  • Operational knowledge of basic hand tools required
  • Operational knowledge of basic shop equipment (e.g., vise, press, floor jacks, etc.) required

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics and corrective action on major and minor vehicle issues, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and electric-vehicle systems.
  • Train, coach, and supervise underclass technicians (e.g., Mechanic Tech II, Mechanic Helper) in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Schedule and assign repair and preventive maintenance tasks to maximize fleet uptime and shop productivity.
  • Ensure all work meets DOT, manufacturer, and Roberts Hawaii maintenance standards.
  • Generate detailed work orders daily to document all completed maintenance and repairs in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform routine repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on diesel and gas-powered vehicles, including buses equipped with wheelchair lifts and air conditioning systems.
  • Maintain proper inventory levels of tools, parts, and supplies; coordinate parts orders as needed.
  • Promote and ensure a safe, clean, and organized shop environment in compliance with company safety policies and OSHA standards.
  • Collaborate with the Municipal Operations and Safety departments to support road calls, breakdowns, and special service needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.
