About The Position

This position is located in the Administration Division of the Airports Department within the City of Oklahoma City and reports directly to an immediate supervisor. Employees in this classification perform duties of a professional nature requiring skills, knowledge and abilities acquired prior to assuming the duties of the position. The Municipal Accountant III may supervise the activities of a work unit comprised of Municipal Accountants I and II, Accounting Technicians and/or other clerical personnel. Work is reviewed by an immediate supervisor for soundness of judgment and general effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of governmental accounting experience or five (5) years of accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of advanced accounting concepts, techniques and principles.
  • Knowledge of regulations governing Municipal Accounting.
  • Skill in applying knowledge of accounting to work performed.
  • Skill in analyzing large quantities of financial data.
  • Skill in verbal and written communications.
  • Skill in applying administrative and managerial principles to work performed.
  • Ability to supervise clerical and professional personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher in Finance, Accounting, or a closely related field.
  • Experience performing fixed asset duties, including tracking, reconciliation, or reporting.
  • Experience processing accounts payable transactions in a governmental or similarly complex environment.
  • Experience supporting or participating in financial year-end activities.

Responsibilities

  • Apply accounting principles and practices to a computerized municipal accounting system to maintain accurate records of municipal accounts.
  • Monitor expenditures and prepare periodic financial statements and administrative reports.
  • Exchange information with other City employees, outside agencies and citizens to discuss the legality of expenditures, explain governmental regulations, and to provide or obtain information related to budgetary considerations, financial reports, etc.
  • Evaluate pronouncements or publications of various professional standard-setting organizations to assess the City's accounting responsibility.
  • Communicate with the Municipal Counselor's Office concerning the legality of accounting applications.
  • Prepare special financial reports as requested by the City Manager, Council, citizens committees, etc.
  • Develop in-house training programs for professional and technical staff.
  • Compliance with GAAP, GASB, FASB, and legal interpretations.
  • Performs additional duties as required.
