About The Position

Are you a recent journalism graduate looking to launch your career in a newsroom where your work truly matters? The St. Joseph News-Press and News-PressNOW are seeking motivated early-career journalists who are ready to build real, hands-on experience in a mid-size Midwest community with a long tradition of trusted, high-quality reporting. Located just 40 miles north of Kansas City, News-PressNOW and the St. Joseph News-Press serve as the region’s leading sources of local news—across print, digital, and multimedia platforms. Our reporters contribute to the award-winning St. Joseph News-Press, the area’s largest and most established newspaper, as well as newspressnow.com, the most widely used news website in northwest Missouri. At the St. Joseph News-Press, we’ve spent more than 170 years delivering credible, community-centered journalism. Our newsroom provides full training on all the tools of today’s multimedia environment, from leading-edge software to modern field equipment, helping every reporter grow into a well-rounded Multi-Media Journalist. As you gain experience, you’ll build skills across print, digital, video, and audience engagement — working in a collaborative newsroom that values integrity and community trust. Upcoming openings include versatile reporters who can handle general assignments, daily news, and enterprise features with a multimedia mindset. Successful candidates will demonstrate curiosity, strong news judgment, and a desire to deliver journalism that reflects and serves the people of St. Joseph and the Midland Empire.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in Journalism, Digital Media, Interactive/Converged Media, or a related field
  • Proficiency with general productivity tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong news judgment and understanding of potential legal liabilities
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, sources, and community members
  • Residency within the St. Joseph DMA (a long-term interest in living and working in the Midwest is highly preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and insured vehicle
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check
