About The Position

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking an MSL Field Director, Caplyta to lead the US Northeast Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team in the Central territory. This role involves providing scientific, clinical, research, and educational support to healthcare professionals and internal partners regarding Caplyta. The Field Director will partner with the MSL Head to develop and execute regional strategy, ensuring customer-centric, insight-driven, and compliant scientific engagement. Key responsibilities include coaching and developing direct reports (MSLs), overseeing the execution of field Medical Affairs programs, ensuring scientific acumen and professional skills of the team, and removing barriers to impactful scientific engagement. The role also requires staying updated on scientific information, coaching the team on collecting and analyzing medical insights, and demonstrating effective change leadership. Close coordination with Medical Affairs, Scientific Affairs, and cross-functional partners is expected, along with identifying solutions and making recommendations to the MSL Head. The Field Director will collaborate with internal business partners to meet customer scientific needs and ensure all activities comply with regulatory and healthcare guidelines.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a master’s degree is required. PharmD, PhD, MD highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of pharmaceutical industry, and a minimum of 2 years of MSL experience are required.
  • Previous people management responsibility is required.
  • Must live in their assigned region and in close proximity to an airport.
  • A valid US driver’s license
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning emerging technologies, such as AI, through exploration, iteration, and applying new tools over time
  • Experience building team AI literacy and confidence, reinforcing trusted and responsible AI use and sound judgment

  • TA-related experience is preferred
  • Proficiency in data gathering and analysis, clinical expertise, problem solving, interpersonal influence, and cross-functional collaboration strategic thinking and competitive landscape analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Caplyta US Northeast Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team in providing scientific, clinical, research, and educational support.
  • Partner with the MSL Head to set and drive strategy for their region/organized providers, translating TA and Medical Affairs strategy into clear regional priorities, measurable objectives, and executional excellence.
  • Ensure strong clinical engagement strategy for each territory within their region and conduct routine strategy reviews with each MSL direct report.
  • Provide support, coaching, and development to each of their direct reports (MSLs), utilizing the skills framework, routine feedback, and periodic field observation.
  • Oversee the execution of field Medical Affairs programs, including product launches, proactive initiatives, and HCP engagement.
  • Ensure direct reports function at the expected level of scientific acumen/expertise, presentation skills, and soft skill abilities.
  • Remove barriers and align field activities to ensure impactful scientific engagement.
  • Stay abreast of scientific information and disease states to ensure proficient interaction model and coach the team.
  • Ensure direct reports execute collection and analysis of high quality, actionable Medical Insights and effectively communicate them to inform strategy, evidence generation, and lifecycle planning.
  • Demonstrate effective change leadership by upholding professionalism, performance, and integrity in challenging situations.
  • Coordinate closely with Medical Affairs, Scientific Affairs, and cross functional partners to align objectives and execution.
  • Identify possible solution(s) and make a recommendation to the MSL Head for action.
  • Work collaboratively with local and regional internal business partners to meet scientific needs of customers.
  • Provide oversight of all activities in accordance with current regulatory and health care compliance guidelines.
  • Ensure team functions according to the business plan and company directives.
  • Drive team performance through regular field visits and 1:1s, providing observation, coaching, and timely, candid, and constructive feedback.
  • Provide oversight responsibility for team’s training and development.
  • Ensure team optimal capacity, field activity level, and field metrics, using data and dashboards to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Model and develop teams' scientific exchange skills to elevate the quality and impact of medical engagement.
  • Ensure each MSL territory plan is strategic, up to date and actionable.
  • Manage the team through special projects and cross-functional support activities.
  • Recruit, Retain, and develop a diverse high-performing team by implementing inclusive leadership strategies.
  • Provide career and succession planning in support of staff reaching their highest potential.

  • Responsible for timely completion of administrative duties, including assessment and approval of expense reports, preparation and communication of team metric reports, compliance documentation, and operational reporting.
  • Co-lead the communication of MSL team achievements, insights, and impact to appropriate internal partners and leadership.
  • Serve as a leader and role model for compliant, effective cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Ensure routine, high‑quality communication with field partners.
  • Participate in business planning activities as necessary across the various brands and within Medical Affairs.
  • Ensure appropriate training on and execution of proactive initiatives and other permissible field activities.
  • Partner with the MSL Head to develop and execute their region / organized provider strategies.
  • Provide field insights from KOLs and specialists to inform TA strategy, identify emerging trends and unmet needs, and support evidence generation opportunities.
  • Lead assigned scientific projects and programs with joint strategic design with the MSL Head and independent tactical execution.
  • Identify and develop field scientific strategies, aligned to TA medical priorities and lifecycle needs.
  • Participate and/or lead cross functional/company initiatives, representing Field Medical with credibility, influence, and strategic perspective.
  • Champion a culture of excellence by establishing scalable, high-impact processes that foster alignment, enhance efficiency, garner buy-in, drive compliance, and empower cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals.
