About The Position

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking an MSL Field Director for the Caplyta US Northeast territory. This role involves leading a team of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) to provide scientific, clinical, research, and educational support to healthcare professionals and internal partners regarding Caplyta. The position emphasizes customer-centric, insight-driven, and compliant scientific engagement. The Field Director will partner with the MSL Head to develop and execute regional strategy, translate therapeutic area and Medical Affairs strategy into regional priorities, and ensure strong clinical engagement strategies for each territory. Key responsibilities include coaching and developing direct reports, overseeing the execution of field Medical Affairs programs, ensuring high levels of scientific acumen and communication skills within the team, and removing barriers to impactful scientific engagement. The role also requires staying updated on scientific information and disease states, coaching the team on collecting and analyzing medical insights, and demonstrating effective change leadership through professionalism, resilience, and accountability. Close coordination with Medical Affairs, Scientific Affairs, and cross-functional partners is expected, along with critical thinking and sound judgment in making recommendations to the MSL Head. The Field Director will also collaborate with internal business partners to meet customer scientific needs and ensure all activities comply with regulatory and healthcare compliance guidelines.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a master’s degree is required. PharmD, PhD, MD highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of pharmaceutical industry experience is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of MSL experience is required.
  • Previous people management responsibility is required.
  • Proficiency in data gathering and analysis.
  • Proficiency in clinical expertise.
  • Proficiency in problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the Caplyta US Northeast Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team.
  • Providing scientific, clinical, research, and educational support to healthcare professionals and internal partners related to Caplyta.
  • Ensuring customer-centric, insight-driven, and compliant scientific engagement across the region.
  • Partnering with the MSL Head to set and drive strategy for their region/organized providers.
  • Translating TA and Medical Affairs strategy into clear regional priorities, measurable objectives, and executional excellence.
  • Ensuring strong clinical engagement strategy for each territory within their region.
  • Conducting routine strategy reviews with each MSL direct report, leveraging data, insights, AI tools, and performance trends.
  • Providing support, coaching, and development to direct reports (MSLs) using a skills framework, routine feedback, and field observation.
  • Focusing on strength-based coaching, continuous improvement, and career development planning.
  • Overseeing the execution of field Medical Affairs programs, including product launches, proactive initiatives, and HCP engagement.
  • Ensuring direct reports function at the expected level of scientific acumen/expertise, presentation skills, and soft skill abilities.
  • Removing barriers and aligning field activities to ensure impactful scientific engagement.
  • Staying abreast of scientific information and disease states to ensure proficient interaction model and coach the team.
  • Ensuring direct reports execute collection and analysis of high quality, actionable Medical Insights and effectively communicate them.

  • Providing oversight of all activities in accordance with current regulatory and health care compliance guidelines.

  • Managing a regional MSL team, ensuring they function according to the business plan and company directives.
  • Driving team performance through regular field visits and 1:1s, providing observation, coaching, and feedback.
  • Providing oversight for team’s training and development, ensuring ongoing scientific, skills based, and leadership capability building.
  • Ensuring team optimal capacity, field activity level, and field metrics, using data and dashboards to monitor performance.
  • Modeling and developing teams' scientific exchange skills.
  • Ensuring each MSL territory plan is strategic, up to date and actionable.
  • Managing the team through special projects and cross-functional support activities.
  • Recruiting, retaining, and developing a diverse high-performing team by implementing inclusive leadership strategies.

  • Ensuring routine, high-quality communication with field partners.
  • Participating in business planning activities as necessary.
  • Ensuring appropriate training on and execution of proactive initiatives and other permissible field activities.
  • Partnering with the MSL Head to develop and execute their region / organized provider strategies.
  • Providing field insights from KOLs and specialists to inform TA strategy, identify emerging trends and unmet needs, and support evidence generation opportunities.
  • Leading assigned scientific projects and programs with joint strategic design with the MSL Head and independent tactical execution.
  • Identifying and developing field scientific strategies, aligned to TA medical priorities and lifecycle needs.
  • Participating and/or leading cross functional/company initiatives, representing Field Medical with credibility, influence, and strategic perspective.
  • Championing a culture of excellence by establishing scalable, high-impact processes that foster alignment, enhance efficiency, garner buy-in, drive compliance, and empower cross-functional teams.
