About The Position

The MRI Technologist performs a variety of complex diagnostic MRI procedures, with the primary responsibility of completing diagnostic studies from inception to completion under the direction of the radiologist. This includes performing routine MRIs and MRAs, taking accurate verbal patient histories, and starting IVs to administer IV contrast. The role involves maintaining a positive imaging environment for patients, acting as a patient liaison to the radiologist, performing quality assurance checks on equipment, ensuring MRI safety standards are met, and operating required equipment according to established guidelines and protocols. The technologist is responsible for preparing and positioning patients for procedures to achieve the highest quality images, explaining procedures in laymen's terms, and ensuring all patient questions are addressed prior to the exam.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited education program in MRI required.
  • ARRT Registered Technologist, RT(MR) or ARMRIT Certified Technologist required.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support, AED Adult & Pediatric CPR required.
  • Minimum of one year MRI imaging experience.
  • Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
  • Repetitive motion: computer keyboard.
  • Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs.
  • Manipulate MRI coils/table and accessory equipment.
  • Reach equipment at heights greater than 6 feet.
  • Assist in moving patient from stretcher, wheelchair, or bed to and from MRI table.
  • Adequate eyesight to observe the patient’s condition, read MRI computer screen/imaging equipment, and evaluate MRI images for appropriate image quality.
  • Sufficient hearing to respond to patient’s verbal inquiries and communicate with other personnel involved in the care of the patient.
  • Initiate timely response to audible alarms and signals.
  • Ability to perform multi tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain self composure and a positive attitude under stress.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of complex diagnostic MRI procedures, with the primary responsibility of completing diagnostic studies from inception to completion under the direction of the radiologist.
  • Performs routine MRIs and MRAs, takes accurate verbal patient histories and starts I.V.s to administer IV contrast.
  • Maintains a positive imaging environment for patients and acts as a patient liaison to the radiologist.
  • Performs quality assurance checks on equipment and procedure areas.
  • Ensures proper MRI safety standards are met.
  • Ensures that all ferromagnetic materials are located outside of scan room.
  • Able to explain correct emergency shutdown procedures.
  • Able to properly demonstrate fire and safety evacuations.
  • Patient transfer/transport equipment is checked to ensure compliance with safe operational standards.
  • Operates required equipment necessary to produce scans using established guidelines and MRI protocols.
  • Completes necessary protocolling tasks.
  • Performs ordered examinations according to written MRI protocols.
  • Properly identifies patients using three unique identifiers.
  • Performs introduction to patient using name and role title.
  • Explains procedure in laymen’s terms using educational/informational aids when necessary.
  • Allows time for patient feedback and questions, ensuring all questions are addressed prior to exam start.
  • Verifies completion of MRI screening forms and validates provided information.
  • Starts IV access according to standard procedure and injects media under the direction of a physician.
  • Selects appropriate IV site according to exam protocol.
  • Introduces venipuncture following established standard precaution guidelines.
  • Prepares correct IV contrast and the correct amount for administration according to established protocols.
  • Selects appropriate injection parameters and monitors injection according to established guidelines.
  • Records injection amount, IV location and flow rate on correct documents.
  • Generates QA documentation (QR reports) when infiltration or reaction occurs.
  • Prepares and positions patient for procedure by using established MRI protocols to achieve the highest quality image.
