The MRI Technologist performs magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures on patients of all ages for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. This role involves operating MRI scanners and power injectors to produce images, assisting with interventional procedures, and reformatting complex images. The technologist integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, and patient care to provide diagnostic information. Key responsibilities include assessing patient vital signs, managing emergencies, understanding anatomy, physiology, pathology, and MRI physics, and maintaining safety protocols. The MRI Technologist acts as a liaison between patients, practitioners, and the support team, demonstrating sensitivity to patient needs. They are also responsible for preparing, administering, and documenting medications, participating in quality improvement, and engaging in continuing education. The scope of practice includes performing MRI procedures, applying safety principles, selecting appropriate imaging protocols, documenting exam information, maintaining archives, assisting with interventional procedures, and ensuring patient safety during transport. They also receive and document imaging orders, corroborate patient history, verify informed consent, prepare patients, apply ALARA principles, perform venipuncture and IV access, administer medications, evaluate image quality, escalate emergencies, provide patient education, and mentor students. Independent actions include performing all MRI exams and procedures, completing exams based on physician orders and protocols, evaluating safety checklists, prioritizing workload, representing VCU Health System goals, adhering to regulatory standards, resolving service issues, and initiating equipment service calls. Lead technologists may also coordinate work assignments and serve as clinical resources.
