About The Position

Atrium Health Union West is seeking an MRI Technologist to perform MRI procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. The technologist will operate MRI Scanners and associated equipment, including scanner, post-processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, and patient monitoring equipment. The role involves examining requests, verifying orders, preparing and explaining procedures to patients, obtaining medical history, and ensuring the technical quality of images. The technologist will also administer IV contrast, perform basic patient care, initiate life support measures when necessary, and assist in code blue procedures. Additionally, the role includes performing invasive procedures with sterile technique, practicing radiation safety, reporting equipment malfunctions, and operating the radiology computer system for order entry and charging. The MRI Technologist will maintain a clean and stocked work area and assist other medical personnel as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
  • Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry eligible or ARMRIT program required.
  • MRI registry must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
  • Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
  • Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies.
  • Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation.
  • Frequently may be required to stretch, bend twist, squat or kneel in the daily operation of the MRI department.
  • May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, being near moving equipment.
  • Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards.
  • Operate MRI Scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency.
  • Examine requests and verify orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam.
  • Contact ordering provider when there are discrepancies.
  • Properly identify patients using two identifiers and assist patients while offering a brief explanation of the procedures.
  • Prepare patients for the procedure with a full explanation and document on appropriate worksheets.
  • Interview patients for a complete medical history and review EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history.
  • Record medical history on requisitions and correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
  • Assume responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results.
  • Prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols and record contrast type and amount.
  • Evaluate technical quality of images and consult with a Radiologist if needed.
  • Recognize abnormal anatomy and process any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
  • Perform basic patient care functions and inform appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Initiate life support measures for patients when necessary and assist in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
  • Perform MRI scanning and assist Physicians/PA during invasive procedures.
  • Practice proper sterile technique in the preparation of necessary supplies.
  • Perform all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
  • Practice principle of radiation safety for self, employees, patients and family members.
  • Follow appropriate radiation safety standards.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
  • Adhere to the hospital fire and safety procedures.
  • Attend all in-service classes and complete all required safety modules.
  • Operate radiology computer system to include entering orders and charging procedures/supplies.
  • Document contrast administration in the MAR.
  • Maintain assigned work area in a neat and orderly fashion, keeping it stocked.
  • Clean all work areas to promote cleanliness in the workplace.
  • Assist other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with a MRI scan.
  • Maintain knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields.
