About The Position

NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island is seeking an MRI Technologist, FGP - Outpatient - Riverhead to perform medically prescribed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures for designated anatomical areas under the general supervision of a radiologist. The MRI IV Specialist demonstrates advanced technical competence, independent clinical judgment, and adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards while ensuring exceptional patient care and diagnostic image quality.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or Technical Diploma Graduate of AMA approved school of Radiology or Imaging Services.
  • Radiologic Technologist (Temporary) Permit at time of hire
  • NYS Radiologic Technologist IV License within 180 days of issuance of Rad Tech Permit
  • Certification in ARRT (X-Ray) within 180 days of hire
  • Current BLS certification
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

  • 1 - 2 years MRI technologist or training experience.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews physician orders, patient prescriptions, MRI safety screening forms, and prior imaging to ensure exam appropriateness and patient safety.
  • Assesses and prepares patients for contrast administration, including pre-medication for allergic reactions when indicated.
  • Obtains patient consent when required and verifies patient identity using established hospital protocols.
  • Explains MRI procedures clearly to patients, addressing concerns and reducing anxiety while maintaining patient dignity, privacy, and comfort throughout the exam.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to medical emergencies, immediately notifying nursing staff, PAs, or physicians as required.
  • Implements isolation precautions and follows infection control standards when applicable.
  • Ensures adherence to MRI safety standards, including zone management, scanner room safety, patient belongings, and accompanying persons.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of MRI anatomy, scanning protocols, incidental findings, scanner technology, and power injector setup.
  • Independently performs MRI examinations according to departmental protocols and radiologist directives.
  • Select appropriate imaging protocols, positioning, coils, and technical parameters based on patient condition, clinical indication, and anatomical requirements.
  • Modifies imaging techniques as needed to optimize diagnostic quality while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Produces high-quality diagnostic images and performs image post-processing, segmentation, and transmission to PACS in proper anatomical orientation.
  • Performs IV placement and contrast administration according to policy and safety standards.
  • Demonstrates advanced proficiency in MRI equipment operation, setup, and routine maintenance.
  • Performs visual and manual quality control checks and documents for equipment performance data per departmental standards.
  • Operates imaging and peripheral equipment safely and efficiently in accordance with hospital, departmental, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Identifies, reports, and escalates equipment malfunctions, damage, or missing items promptly.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and exam-ready MRI environment.
  • Utilizes HIS/RIS systems accurately in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Accesses and verifies patient data including exam orders, appointment times, reports, and patient history.
  • Demonstrates full knowledge of RIS patient tracking and documents exam start, completion, and departure times as required.
  • Schedules exams from the order entry queue and modifies exams when clinically necessary.
  • Maintains departmental logbooks and records according to established policies and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and fellow technologists to ensure optimal exam outcomes.
  • Assists physicians during procedures when required.
  • Adjusts workflow to accommodate STAT, urgent, and emergency cases while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
  • Seeks guidance from supervisors, lead techs and senior specialists when encountering complex or questionable cases and contributes to problem-solving discussions with peers.
  • Adheres to all departmental, hospital, state, and federal regulations governing MRI practice.
  • Follows established radiologic protocols, policies, and procedure manuals at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental operations and patient care excellence.
  • Position may require flexible work schedules.
  • Position requires the ability to lift, push, pull, or move patients and equipment more than 150 pounds, with or without the use of assistive devices
