The MRI Technologist is responsible for examining requests and verifying orders on each assigned patient. They will refer and question orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam and contact the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The technologist will properly identify patients using two identifiers, assist them, and offer a brief explanation of the procedures. They will prepare patients for the procedure with a full explanation and document on appropriate worksheets. The role involves interviewing patients for a complete medical history, reviewing EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history, and recording medical history on requisitions. They will also correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed. The technologist assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results, prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols, and records contrast type and amount upon request. They evaluate the technical quality of images, consult with a Radiologist if needed, and recognize abnormal anatomy, processing any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed. The role includes performing basic patient care functions, informing appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient's condition, initiating life support measures when necessary, and assisting in "code blue" procedures during medical emergencies. The MRI Technologist performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique and adhering to bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies. They are authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner and practice radiation safety principles for self, employees, patients, and family members. Malfunctioning equipment is reported to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. The technologist maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease, adheres to hospital fire and safety procedures, and completes all required safety modules. They operate the radiology computer system, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and document contrast administration in the MAR. The assigned work area is maintained in a neat and orderly fashion, kept stocked, and cleaned to promote workplace cleanliness. The technologist assists other medical personnel when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan and maintains knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for staff and patients around magnetic fields.
