About The Position

Under the direction of the Imaging Services Director, this position is responsible for performing all aspects of various MRI procedures to the specifications and standards established by the department's Medical Director. The role involves applying good interpersonal and communication processes, utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills, and rotating shifts as assigned. The position adheres to the philosophy of patient safety, reporting potential or actual safety issues, and complying with all departmental and Hospital policies and procedures. It requires maintaining a positive attitude and promoting unity and teamwork among coworkers. The technologist documents examination history, unusual conditions, examination time, and technologist identification in the PACS system, and effectively uses Information Systems for daily duties and billing. Key responsibilities include lifting and transferring patients, maintaining patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance, screening patients for MRI safety, ensuring proper patient and equipment positioning to avoid thermal injuries, managing patients with claustrophobia or anxiety, performing safety inspections, and complying with safety and infection control policies. The role requires assessing the condition of pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients to demonstrate requested anatomy through proper positioning, technique selection, contrast media use, and immobilization devices. Educational information is provided to family members as needed. The technologist is responsible for quality imaging, understanding magnet safety screening and zoning, safe operation and maintenance of MRI equipment, and participating in the organization-wide Performance Improvement Program. This includes reviewing MRI requisitions, verifying examinations, checking patient history, greeting patients, verifying identity, explaining procedures using AIDET for patient satisfaction, and rotating to different shifts and work areas as scheduled or assigned, working overtime as directed. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Diploma from an accredited MRI Program of an approved MRI School
  • Minimum of one year in acute hospital base experience preferred
  • MRI ARRT Registration or ARMRIT
  • Current Level II Training Certification
  • Venipuncture Certification
  • BLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Effectively uses the Information Systems programs for daily duties and billing procedures.
  • Lifts and transfers patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient care and medical record information.
  • Abides by HIPAA regulations to access PHI only as necessary for job classification.
  • Patient screening criteria that address ferromagnetic items, electrically conductive items, medical implants and devices, and risk for nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF).
  • Proper patient and equipment positioning activities to avoid thermal injuries.
  • Equipment and supplies that have been determined to be acceptable for use in the MRI environment (MR safe or MR conditional).
  • MRI safety response procedures for patients who require urgent or emergent medical care.
  • MRI system emergency shutdown procedures, such as MRI system quench and cryogen safety procedures.
  • Patient hearing protection.
  • Management of patients with claustrophobia, anxiety, or emotional distress.
  • Performs safety inspection of equipment prior to initial use.
  • Reports unsafe acts or conditions to manager.
  • Complies with all safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Possesses the skills and knowledge needed to assess the condition of the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patient(s) in order to demonstrate requested anatomy throughout proper patient positioning, technique selection, selection of contrast media, and application of immobilization and magnet safety devices.
  • Provides educational information to family members as required.
  • Responsible for quality imaging including proper protocol /sequence and patient positioning.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, competency of magnet safety screening and zoning.
  • Responsible for safe operation and maintenance of MRI equipment.
  • Responsible for understanding and participating in the organization wide Performance Improvement Program through orientation, education, departmental and interdepartmental performance improvement, and quality planning activities.
  • Reviews MRI requisition verifies examination with doctors orders, checks patient history and special instructions.
  • Greets patients, verifies their identity, and explains procedure utilizing AIDET for Patient Satisfaction.
  • Rotates to different shifts and work areas as scheduled or assigned, works overtime as directed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
