About The Position

The MRI Technologist I is responsible for examining requests and verifying orders on each assigned patient. They will refer and question orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam and contact the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The technologist will properly identify patients using two identifiers, assist them, and offer a brief explanation of the procedures. Patients will be prepared for the procedure with a full explanation and documentation on appropriate worksheets. A thorough patient interview will be conducted for complete medical history, and in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMRs will be reviewed to obtain pertinent clinical history. Medical history will be recorded on requisitions, and other test results and laboratory data will be correlated with the exam being performed. The technologist assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results. They will prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols, recording contrast type and amount upon request. Technical quality of images will be evaluated, consulting with a Radiologist if needed. Abnormal anatomy will be recognized, and any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements will be processed as instructed. Basic patient care functions will be performed, and appropriate nursing personnel will be informed of any changes in the patient’s condition. Life support measures will be initiated for patients when necessary, and assistance will be provided during "code blue" procedures and medical emergencies. MRI scanning will be performed, and Physicians/PA will be assisted during invasive procedures. Proper sterile technique will be practiced in the preparation of necessary supplies, and all invasive procedures will be performed in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures. The technologist is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. Principles of radiation safety for self, employees, patients, and family members will be practiced, following appropriate radiation safety standards. Malfunctioning equipment will be reported to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. Knowledge and skills will be maintained to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease. Hospital fire and safety procedures will be adhered to, and all in-service classes will be attended, completing all required safety modules. The radiology computer system will be operated, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies. Contrast administration will be documented in the MAR. The assigned work area will be maintained in a neat and orderly fashion, kept completely stocked, and all work areas will be cleaned to promote cleanliness in the workplace. Other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, will be assisted when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan. Knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields will be maintained.

Requirements

Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry eligible or ARMRIT program.
MRI registry must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
BLS.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies.
Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation.
Frequently may be to stretch, bend twist, squat or kneel in the daily operation of the MRI department.
May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs , being near moving equipment.
Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.

Responsibilities

Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed.
Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
Performs basic patient care functions.
Informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition.
Initiates life support measures for patients when necessary.
Assists in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
Performs MRI scanning and assists Physicians/PA during invasive procedures.
Practices proper sterile technique in the preparation of necessary supplies.
Performs all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures.
Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
