About The Position

Reporting to the Buildings Services Manager, the Moving Assistant is responsible for moving, hauling and storing various office items and equipment throughout the University, and will operate moving equipment such as trucks, forklifts, and hand operated tools. Disassembles and assembles furniture and/or equipment. This is a designated emergency personnel position and employee must report during emergency and inclement weather situations. The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Requirements

  • Previous experience delivering and assembling furniture.
  • Knowledge of moving and hauling practices.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to operate large trucks (including commercial fork trucks), and other equipment used in moving.
  • Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 100 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs.
  • Ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Good teamwork skills.
  • Ability to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
  • Must be able to report during emergency and inclement weather situations as a designated emergency personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with a moving company.
  • Previous experience in a university or large commercial setting.
