About The Position

This is entry level technical work in the inspection of motor vehicles-for-hire industry including school buses, wreckers, and day-care vehicles for violation of state and local motor vehicle safety laws and ordinances. Work requires knowledge of state and local motor vehicle safety laws and ordinances and techniques, methods, and procedures used in inspection of motor vehicles, as well as the operation of specialized testing equipment, which is learned on the job and through specialized training. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and include contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. Work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, and although patterned, some latitude is permitted to consider and choose the most appropriate technique, method, or procedure to follow. The computer operation work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requires only the choice of the correct procedure. Work is performed mainly in a motor vehicle inspection station, but field inspections are required. Work requires the operation of standard motor vehicle inspection equipment and tools such as a pneumatic-hydraulic lift tread depth indicator. The physical demands consist mainly of walking or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time, using standard motor vehicle inspection equipment on an ongoing basis, and occasionally lifting and moving objects weighing 50 pounds or more. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to instructions and established work routines, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to superior's approval.

Requirements

  • Two years' of education and/or experience in the inspection or general repair and overhaul of motor vehicles.
  • A valid Class B Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.
  • FL School Bus Inspectors Certification must secure within 6 months and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operation including operation of basic equipment required on domestic and foreign motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of state and local motor vehicle safety laws and ordinances, which includes Chapters 680 and 158 of the Municipal Code and motor vehicle equipment standards.
  • Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in inspection of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pneumatic-hydraulic lift, tread depth indicator, and any other equipment related to motor vehicle inspection equipment and tools.
  • Ability to detect defects in automotive equipment or maladjustment of parts.
  • Ability to operate and maintain mechanical and electric motor vehicle testing devices and related equipment and tools.
  • Ability to count money and give correct change.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply motor vehicle inspection laws and ordinances, technical and motor vehicle manufacturer's manuals, and general work instructions.
  • Ability to clean and maintain work area including painting.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects motor vehicle operating devices and mechanisms according to a prepared check list sequence and determines whether prescribed standards are met.
  • Informs driver of whether the vehicle meets prescribed standards and if not, deficiencies, time limit for repair, and procedure for re-inspection.
  • Collects inspection fees and maintains a record of the monies collected and inspection stickers used.
  • Operates and maintains mechanical and electric motor vehicle testing devices and related equipment and tools.
  • Provides information to bus contractors and customers of any other vehicles inspected regarding motor vehicle specification, technical and mechanical requirements.
  • Maintains motor vehicle inspection station.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.
