About The Position

Employees in this class primarily operate semi-tractor trailer equipment and other high skill level heavy construction/ maintenance equipment used in a municipal highway, landfill or recycling department. This class differs from the Motor Equipment Operator II position due to the heavier equipment and more complex nature of the equipment operated requiring greater skill along with increased responsibility. Employees in this class must exercise significant judgment in over-the-road transport of heavy equipment and substances in tank trailers as well as in the operation of various types of heavy trucks and construction equipment. The work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over Motor Equipment Operator I and II levels. The incumbent does related work as required.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience in the operation of trucks and other equipment used in construction.
  • Completion of a two-year training program for heavy equipment operators may be substituted for the above year of experience.
  • Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State Driver’s license at time of application and possession of license at time of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Class B New York State Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) at the time of appointment.
  • A valid Class A New York State Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions shall be obtained within six (6) months of appointment and shall be maintained throughout the tenure of employment in the position.
