About The Position

This position is responsible for operating a variety of motorized and automotive equipment as it relates to stormwater drainage, runoff, and related infrastructure. The employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the operation of trucks and heavy, motorized equipment.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina CDL Class A license, or any valid CDL Class A license with ability to obtain a North Carolina CDL Class A license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
  • Possession of a valid Level I Erosion and Sedimentation Control certification or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practice of operating and servicing trucks and heavy construction equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to operate several types of trucks and construction equipment related to the Stormwater department.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, directions, and traffic signals.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of motorized equipment, hand tools, and electrical power tools to clear, maintain, and repair city storm drain lines, pipes, catch basins, and other drainage structures.
  • Repairs and maintains storm drain lines from the outside; climbs in manholes; wraps broken storm drain lines to prevent leaking and uses a backhoe and/or tractor to dig holes to repair or replace leaking and broken pipes; cleans ditches, fills cave-ins, and cleans streets and basins.
  • Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.
  • Inspects job site and determines the workload and proper equipment and materials needed to perform work.
  • Ensures the safety of city equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for pedestrians, overhead utility lines, and other obstructions; performs traffic management duties such as flagging vehicles.
  • Consults with supervisors concerning areas of grading, leveling, storm pipe slope, and other maintenance issues; recommends solutions based on experience.
  • Works in stream and creek environments and city-maintained rights-of-way.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
