About The Position

This position operates motorized equipment for park maintenance and supervises state inmate labor. Duties include operating garbage and dump trucks, a front-end loader, lawn equipment, and a chain saw; maintaining vehicles and equipment; transporting inmates; and completing daily activity reports. The employee works outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather, and may encounter dust, dirt, grease, moving machinery, and irritating chemicals. Protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves are required.

Requirements

• Knowledge of methods and techniques used in park maintenance activities.
• Knowledge of techniques used to maintain assigned equipment.
• Skill in operating various types of heavy and light construction equipment.
• Skill in problem solving and decision making.
• Skill in supervising inmate laborers.
• Skill in preparing reports and records.
• Oral and written communication skills.
• Specialized training in the occupational field in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties, usually gained through an apprenticeship or internship, or one to two years in a similar position.
• Valid driver's license.
• Must supervise state inmate labor.
• Must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the department's required timeframe, normally six months, though this may be altered.
• Ability to meet the described physical demands, including intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, and walking; occasional lifting of light and heavy objects; climbing ladders; and using tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

Responsibilities

• Operate a garbage truck and supervise inmates removing trash from parks.
• Mow grass and operate a weed-eater, edger, and lawn tractor.
• Operate a dump truck.
• Operate a front-end loader and load or unload material from trucks.
• Operate a chain saw to remove trees, limbs, and brush.
• Supervise inmate laborers and transport inmates to and from the corrections facility.
• Inspect vehicles and equipment and perform general maintenance duties.
• Maintain an inventory of supplies and tools and wash vehicles.
• Mark sports fields.
• Complete required reports of daily activities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
