About The Position

Under close supervision, operates heavy equipment and utilizes various tools associated with the installation and maintenance of water and sewer services, lines, and accessories. Performs daily maintenance of equipment used. The City of North Myrtle Beach is committed to delivering excellence and creating a supportive work environment. Program Overview: Our CDL Apprenticeship Program is designed to provide comprehensive training and hands-on experience to individuals pursuing a Commercial Driver's License. Through a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-road training, apprentices will gain the skills and knowledge needed to become professional truck drivers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One to two years of experience in equipment operation, with exposure to leadership responsibilities
  • Valid commercial driver's license at hire
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical exam and drug test.
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to learning.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of water and sewer lines and services.
  • Operates heavy equipment and other tools and equipment associated with the installation and maintenance of water and sewer systems.
  • Operates such machinery as backhoes, front-end loaders, bull dozers, track hoes, farm tractors, trenchers, dump trucks, tractor trailers, vactor jet rodder, water pump power generators, power saws, tapping tools, band saw, drill press, grinder, smoke blower, blow torches, shovels, rakes, hand tools, air compressor, jackhammer, pipe saw, drilling machine, etc.
  • Performs required daily check of all equipment fluids, oils, and grease; maintains machinery by adding fluids, oils and grease, and regular cleaning.
  • Observes all prescribed safety rules in the performance of activities and uses the appropriate safety equipment and apparel as required.
  • Performs welding and torch cutting duties as needed.
  • Answers emergency calls on an on-call basis as assigned.
  • Transports heavy equipment as needed.
  • Serves on the confined space crew performing all confined space entries for the Public Utilities Department.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Participate in classroom training at Horry Georgetown Technical College covering CDL regulations, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
  • Receive assisted driving on the road with experienced drivers to gain practical driving experience.
  • Learn and practice vehicle inspection and maintenance procedures.
  • Adhere to company safety policies and DOT regulations.
  • Complete all assigned tasks and training modules within the program timeline.
