About The Position

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) seeks applicants for a Motor Equipment Mechanic III - Wachusett to perform duties including repairing, overhauling, and servicing a variety of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. This role involves diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues, performing routine maintenance, managing parts and supplies, and maintaining records. The position also requires interaction with vendors and management regarding repairs and purchases, and ensuring the proper functioning and cleanliness of vehicles and equipment. Additionally, incumbents are responsible for garage maintenance, providing emergency road service, and maintaining professional workplace conduct.

Requirements

  • At least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the repair, maintenance and overhaul of automotive equipment such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers, cranes, front end loaders, etc.
  • At least one year of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C or hoisting license.

Nice To Haves

  • Heavy equipment repair experience (trucks, loaders, bulldozers, cranes, snow equipment, etc.).
  • ASE certifications
  • Experience maintaining municipal, state, construction, or fleet vehicles.
  • Manage garage operations and fleet maintenance activities.
  • Experience using fleet maintenance management software, such as RTA Fleet Management Software (RTA360).
  • Entering labor hours, parts usage, preventive maintenance schedules, and repair histories into fleet management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the repairing, overhauling, and servicing fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors, boats, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, and landscape equipment.
  • Adjusts and repairs brakes, carburetors, hydraulic pumps, cylinder heads, valves and similar automotive components.
  • Repair and overhaul equipment of increasing complexity such as bulldozers, backhoes, and other heavy equipment.
  • Performs periodic motor equipment inspections and services for state vehicles by changing and repairing tires, adjusting brakes, replacing fluids, cleaning and lubricating parts.
  • Performs service and repairs on small equipment such as chainsaws, brush saws, line trimmers.
  • Retrieve automotive parts and supplies from vendors. Sign slips, invoices and other documents in a timely manner.
  • Cleans vehicles and equipment including washing, waxing and vacuuming vehicles.
  • Receives shipments and is responsible for contents. Sign slips, invoices and other documents in a timely manner.
  • Login credentials for RTA360. Submit work repairs such as parts, costs and labor costs for all fleet vehicles that are assigned to region.
  • Meets with FOTL and Deputy Regional Director regarding FY purchases of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment needs.
  • Solicit bids from outside vendors for repairs, parts and service.
  • Picks up and returns vehicles for repair and service, ensures work has been completed and in working order.
  • Operates other equipment used in automobile operations and repair such as lifts, jacks and hydraulic testing equipment.
  • Responsible for maintenance of garage and mechanic tools.
  • Provides emergency road service or all fleet vehicles and state-owned equipment.
  • Maintains records for the repairs to be completed.

Present pertinent information, questions, and concerns during supervisory meetings while discussing current work projects and any necessary project adjustments. Properly inform supervisor of work-related concerns or possible problems that could result in mistakes, conflicts with colleagues, etc.
